Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Malm nightstand (IKEA) and now notice that it is quite wobbly. I followed the assembly instructions carefully, but I wonder if I might have made a mistake somewhere.

Specifically, the table wobbles mainly when you gently push it or place something on it. The individual side panels and the top are all securely attached, but the overall stability is still lacking.

Could it be that I didn’t tighten some screws enough, or that the assembly sequence was incorrect? Or are there known stability issues with this model that should be considered?

I would appreciate a knowledgeable assessment, as well as any tips for improving the stability. Thanks in advance!

Hey son68,

Wobbly furniture is always annoying, but sometimes it’s just due to small details—like screws that are too loose or missing fasteners. 😊

This could mean that either the joints at the corners aren’t properly fitted or the back panel (which is often made of thinner MDF board) isn’t firmly secured yet. The back panel provides the necessary cross brace that prevents wobbling.

Have you checked if the back panel is fully clipped in or if all the nails are in place? If not, maybe try that—it often fixes the problem!

Hello son68,

your description is very helpful! Here is a brief guide on how to proceed systematically:

1. Check all screw connections: Tighten each screw slowly without over-tightening.

2. Pay attention to the sequence when tightening: Usually, you first stabilize the corners and then the connections in the middle.

3. Inspect the back panel: It is crucial for lateral stability; you may need to loosen it slightly and realign it.

4. Check all small dowels and connectors, as sometimes one does not fully fit into a hole.

If you have the assembly instructions, use them as a checklist. If the wobbling continues afterward, feel free to get back in touch!

Wobbling is almost always caused by screws that are too loose or a missing back panel.

Check the wall plugs and properly attach the back panel. Then the Malm nightstand will be stable.

Hello son68,

Your issue with the wobbly Malm nightstand sounds familiar. Often, the back panel is overlooked, even though it plays a crucial role.

The Malm system is designed so that the side panels and back panel work together. Therefore, you should make sure the nightstand is placed on a level surface before tightening the screws.

Sometimes the back panel doesn’t sit flush if the furniture is on an uneven floor. Try this: place the nightstand on a different surface, check the back panel, and carefully retighten all the screws.

If that doesn’t help, you can also check the connectors (especially the metal brackets or cam locks) – make sure none are bent or damaged.

Yes, I have fully installed the back panel and all the nails should be there. However, I had a small issue when hammering the nails in; they are almost completely in, but I didn’t countersink them fully flush.

I didn’t specifically follow that, I will go through it step by step again. Thanks for the tip!

Does anyone have experience with the Malm screws? I suspect some might not be screwed in deep enough, but they are quite difficult to turn.
