Hello everyone,

I want to add a suitable floor protector to my Billy shelf to protect both the floor and the shelf feet from scratches and moisture. I’m unsure which material would be best. Should I use felt pads, rubber mats, or flexible plastic sheets? It’s important to me that the protector is durable, doesn’t slip, and leaves no residue on the laminate flooring. Also, I would like to know if there is anything special to consider regarding the bottom edge of the Billy shelf to ensure optimal adhesion of the protective material. Which materials and methods do you recommend, and do you have any practical tips for installation to make sure the protection lasts? Thanks in advance!

Hello lilateo,

to give you a well-founded recommendation, it would be helpful to know the condition of your floor – laminate sounds like it might be sensitive to scratches and moisture. Generally, I often recommend high-quality felt pads with a self-adhesive backing for Billy shelves because they adapt well and are very discreet. However, I advise cleaning both the floor and the back of the pad before sticking them on (preferably with isopropanol) to ensure no dust particles or grease remain between the shelf leg and the felt, which can significantly improve adhesion.

This is a common challenge with self-adhesive materials. Cheaper pads tend to discolor edges or leave adhesive residue over time.

If you expect moisture (e.g., from cleaning water), rubber pads might be of interest since they repel water. They don’t have an adhesive layer but can be slipped under the shelf. Make sure they have a non-slip bottom.

Alternatively, a thin PVC or silicone protective mat could also work, which can be cut to the exact size. These are often installed by clamping or placing support plates underneath. The advantage here is ease of cleaning, though they tend to be less slip-resistant.

Regarding the bottom edge of the Billy shelf: it is usually made of solid wood or veneer. If it is very rough or uneven, gently sanding it down can help ensure optimal adhesion.

Important: test the adhesive on an inconspicuous spot first to check if it might damage your floor.

Do you already have an idea which material you would prefer, or would you like to weigh the general pros and cons first?

Additional information on durability:

I recommend using self-adhesive felt pads with a thick felt layer (at least 3 mm (0.12 inches)). These offer a good balance between floor protection and stability. They also reduce noise when moving the shelving unit.

This is important because, with laminate flooring, the sealed coating is often the most sensitive area, and adhesive residues are difficult to remove manually.

If you want more stability, flexible rubber pads with a non-slip coating are a good alternative. These are more durable but can cause a slight moiré effect during movement because they almost “stick.”

Practical tip: Before applying, lightly roughen the feet with fine sandpaper if they are completely smooth, so the adhesive sticks better.

Summary:
- Self-adhesive thick felt pads: very gentle, good noise reduction,
- Rubber pads: durable, water-resistant, good slip resistance,
- Plastic mats: easy to clean, but less slip-resistant.

With all options, make sure the dimensions fit exactly to avoid wrinkles or edges that could collect dirt.

Depending on the location (living room vs. workspace), one option may make more sense than the others.

Hello lilateo and all other shelf helpers :-)

Personally, I find felt pads unbeatable because they are like little sneakers for furniture legs – they reduce noise and protect the floor at the same time. If you have a wooden floor, these sticky felt pads absorb almost any unevenness.

I can only agree with that. Just make sure the surface is properly cleaned before applying, otherwise they tend to come off quickly. If that happens, you can often reattach the pads with a bit of spray adhesive.

If you prefer a more permanent solution and don’t move the shelving unit around much, small non-slip rubber pads also work well. But let’s be honest, with Billy shelves the moving factor is usually high, so such protection tends to wear out faster.

One more tip: If your shelf is placed against a wall and the floor is well protected, you can work with an underlay beneath the entire shelving unit – this makes everything more stable and even.

So, felt pads are like a small, subtle helper that no one really notices, but the floor appreciates 🙂

Hello lilateo,

I’m happy to add a brief overview and practical tips since you specifically asked about material recommendations and installation methods:

1. Felt pads: These are usually made of wool felt or synthetic felt with a self-adhesive backing. Important: clean the adhesive surface with rubbing alcohol before applying to remove grease and dust. This ensures maximum adhesion. Felt pads are excellent for delicate floors because they prevent scratches and reduce noise. Drawback: they can come off or smear if exposed to high moisture.

2. Rubber or silicone pads: These are typically placed loosely under the furniture feet. They are slip-resistant and water-repellent. The advantage here is no adhesive residue since they are not glued on. The downside is they may slip if the furniture is moved frequently or heavily.

3. Plastic film or PVC mats: These are durable and easy to clean. They provide good protection but are usually thicker and more visible. Also, adhesion on smooth laminate flooring can be problematic.

Installation tip: If you go for adhesive felt pads, make sure the feet of the Billy shelf have no sharp edges or very rough spots. Light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper helps here. If the shelf carries heavy loads, it’s advisable to replace the felt pads every few years under load to maintain floor protection and safety.

Additionally, you can attach felt strips on the back or side surfaces depending on the room, especially if the shelf is sometimes moved.

In short: For a combination of comfort, protection, and ease of use, high-quality felt pads are usually the first choice, especially on laminate flooring.

Good luck with your project!

Use felt pads with a self-adhesive backing. Clean the floor and the feet thoroughly. Apply, press down, done. Make sure the felt thickness is 3-4mm (0.12-0.16 inches). Use rubber pads only if significant moisture is expected.
