Hello everyone,

some time ago, I bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA. Although the bookcase itself feels sturdy, I noticed that under heavier loads or when something hits it from the side, there is some play and it wobbles slightly. My question is:

How can I effectively increase the stability of my BILLY bookcase using metal brackets?

I am mainly thinking of simple but effective methods that don’t require complicated modifications or special tools. Are there proven positions for mounting the brackets? Should I attach them on the inside or outside? Which sizes and materials of brackets are best suited?

I am also interested in whether the brackets can simply be attached with wood screws or if other fastening methods are recommended. I want to make the bookcase as rigid as possible without compromising its appearance too much. Any tips or advice based on experience or theory would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

to increase the stability of a BILLY shelf unit using metal brackets, it is recommended to install angle brackets at the corners of the shelves, preferably on the back side, as this has the least impact on the appearance.

It is important to use brackets made of galvanized steel or stainless steel to prevent corrosion. The size should be appropriate for the shelf; often, 40x40 mm (1.6x1.6 inches) brackets are sufficient. The best fastening method is with wood screws that are not too long to avoid damaging the material.

Additionally, stability is improved by attaching the brackets on several levels of the shelf, for example at the top and bottom. This primarily prevents lateral wobbling and twisting of the structure.

I would advise against brackets that are directly visible on the front, as they disrupt the design. Mounting on the back or inside has proven effective.

In addition to Niclas’s recommendation:

Besides attaching metal brackets to the corners, using angle profiles at the back of the shelf, for example on the back panels, can significantly increase stability. Make sure to pre-drill holes to prevent the wood from splitting.

Another way to improve stability is by combining the shelf with back panels made of sturdy materials, such as MDF or plywood, especially if the BILLY shelf currently has no or only a thin back panel.

Brackets have the advantage of being easy to install. For a more discreet look, you can also use flat brackets placed on the inside of the back panel of the cabinet.

Simply screw two brackets to the upper rear corners on the inside. This is often enough to make the shelf more stable.

Hello,

I would like to provide a step-by-step guide on how to improve the stability of a BILLY shelf using metal brackets:

1. Choice of brackets: Select galvanized steel brackets measuring about 40x40 mm (1.6x1.6 inches). They should be strong enough to withstand lateral forces.

2. Positioning: Attach the brackets to the rear corners, both at the top and bottom. This ensures even reinforcement and prevents tipping movements.

3. Preparation: Mark the drill holes with a pencil and pre-drill them to avoid wood splitting.

4. Screws: Use wood screws approximately 3–4 mm (0.12–0.16 inches) in diameter and 20–25 mm (0.8–1 inch) long. The screws must hold the wood securely but should not go through the material.

5. Installation: First, screw the brackets to the wall (if wall mounting is possible), then attach them to the shelf. This creates a stable connection and further secures the shelf against tipping over.

6. Check: Finally, verify that the shelf no longer wobbles and that the screws are firmly tightened.

Common mistakes:
- No pre-drilling → wood splits
- Screws too long → screws come out on the other side
- Brackets too small → insufficient stabilization

Summary: With the correct selection, positioning, and fastening of the metal brackets, the stability of the BILLY shelf can be significantly improved without a noticeable impact on appearance.

That’s a useful tip. It is also important that the brackets are sturdy and not too thin.

Regarding the screws: I recommend using only high-quality wood screws suitable for furniture. Cheap screws may loosen or damage the material.

Additionally, the brackets should be installed to resist tension and compression forces. This means the orientation of the brackets should ideally be perpendicular to the direction of the forces.

Another detail often overlooked: if possible, the shelf should also be fastened to the wall. This further increases stability and prevents tipping.
