Hello everyone,

We are currently looking into impact sound insulation and are a bit uncertain about our building project. We have about 200m² (2,150 sq ft) with underfloor heating and almost entirely glued parquet flooring. Only the bathrooms and the utility room will have tiles.

Glued parquet already provides better impact and walking sound insulation, so now the question is whether it’s worth paying the extra cost for improved impact sound insulation like the Wineo Sound-Protect Eco Profi. The current plan is as follows:

- V60 vapor barrier
- 6.5cm (2.6 inches) cement screed
- 5cm (2 inches) EPS thermal insulation WLG 035
- 3cm (1.2 inches) multi-purpose impact sound insulation board EPS 040 DES

What do you think, is it worth the investment? A claimed reduction of 20 dB is quite significant, but I have also read that it might be just marketing talk.

Cheers...

Save yourselves the expense and just glue down the parquet the usual way.
And if you really don’t want to be talked out of it, use that stuff only for the upper floor. In the basement (if you have one), nobody will likely complain.
It’s just marketing and money-making tactics.

Thanks for your assessment. I have looked into it further and found that a 30mm (1.2 inch) EPS impact sound insulation board reduces noise by 29dB, which is even better than the 20dB offered by Wineo Sound-Protect Eco Profi. What surprises me is that only mass helps against sound, and EPS is not exactly known for its mass.

Mass is not the same as weight... this is often a common misconception.

OK, you have to consider the density, but I still don’t understand why EPS is supposed to be so good. I have also seen constructions using stone wool and wood wool. Hmm... could someone explain this a bit?

Have you ever really thought about the topic of impact sound and footstep noise? Also, about floating installation versus glued installation?

Then you would actually know that, for example, the Wineo product you mentioned was specifically designed for floating installation. You can’t glue it down at all.
