melissache27 Aug 2018 07:43Hello everyone,
I would like to gather your experiences and ideas on versatile designs for kitchen islands in Ikea Metod kitchens that offer plenty of storage space. Specifically, I’m interested in how to design the island to be not only visually appealing but also highly functional in terms of storage, without making it look too bulky.
What combinations of cabinets, drawers, or shelves have you used? Is a kitchen island with taller cabinet carcasses more suitable, or do you prefer a lower profile focusing more on drawers? And what about internal organizers that further optimize the storage space?
Are there clever tips for organizing the kitchen elements that also allow using the island as a breakfast or seating area? I look forward to your diverse design approaches and advice on planning, including possible challenges when creating a Metod island with ample storage.
Thanks in advance!

For plenty of storage space, I recommend combining tall pull-out cabinets with a cabinet depth of at least 80 cm (31.5 inches). This way, you can make the most of the full depth.
For the seating area, I would use a thinner countertop on one side to ensure there is enough legroom.

Hello melissache,
you have chosen a very interesting and specific question that requires careful planning. With Metod kitchen islands, the variety of modules is a major advantage. Basically, you can choose between traditional drawers, pull-out cabinets with doors, or open shelves. My recommendation: drawers are ideal for cutlery, cooking utensils, or pots because they provide a good overview.
When it comes to maximizing storage space, 80cm (31.5 inches) high cabinets with internal pull-outs are especially suitable. Often underestimated is the use of pull-out inserts or dividers, which allow you to organize, for example, spices, cutting boards, or storage containers clearly.
A layout option with a seating area on one side of the island requires the countertop to overhang at that point, allowing for some seating. These can be bar stools or regular chairs, depending on the room height and size.
Open shelves on a kitchen island are less advisable if your main focus is storage space, as they tend to collect dust and offer less usable storage.
Are you planning the island in an open kitchen? If so, a mix of closed and open elements could be sensible depending on your usage priorities.

I can clearly understand how challenging it can be to plan a Metod kitchen island with plenty of storage space. I set up a similar island some time ago and faced the same question of how to combine storage and a cozy atmosphere.
For me, it became very important to have open space for decorative items (e.g., cookbooks or nice bowls) with plenty of storage behind that I can access quickly. It’s acceptable if a little clutter is visible through such a mix when the storage becomes much more practical.
I also recommend not only considering drawers and tall cabinets but including U-shaped pull-outs with deep storage—you just need to carefully plan how the space will be used in advance, otherwise a lot of space can be wasted due to impractical divisions.
Which elements are most important to you—do you prefer to store pots and pans, pantry items, or other kitchen accessories?

For optimal use of storage space in an Ikea Metod kitchen island, thoughtful planning of cabinet types is essential. The following tips are practical and proven:
- Use 80cm (31.5 inches) high cabinets for maximum storage space while maintaining a comfortable working height
- Combine full-extension drawers and inner drawers for better organization and easier access
- Module widths of 60cm (24 inches) are ideal to accommodate standard organizers such as cutlery trays or pan inserts
- For seating areas, it is recommended to plan one or more side panels with shelf surfaces at the island; extending the countertop is advisable
- Integrating corner cabinets into islands is usually impractical due to accessibility and should be avoided
Avoid open shelves in the island if storage is the primary goal, as they make inefficient use of space.
Finally, I recommend using the Ikea planner and carefully checking which additional systems are available for each drawer, especially for the Metod series. Good planning saves time and frustration during installation and daily use.

I am indeed planning the kitchen island for an open kitchen combined with a living and dining area. Therefore, it is important to me that the island not only offers plenty of storage space but also remains easily accessible and doesn’t feel like a bulky block.
The 80 cm (31.5 inches) cabinet height makes sense; I was just concerned that the island might appear too massive because of it. Regarding seating: is it best to choose a different countertop material for the seating area to visually separate that zone, or is that more a matter of personal preference?
As for usage, I will primarily store cookware and food supplies, and some electrical appliances will have a fixed place inside the island.
Does anyone have experience with internal organizers specifically for electrical appliances in Metod pull-outs? I want to avoid as much cable clutter as possible.
