nancyHello everyone,
I am currently planning to buy some furniture from the IKEA Malm series because I really like the design and the prices are attractive. However, I have heard that the durability and stability of the Malm series can vary significantly depending on usage and specific materials.
From your experience, I am particularly interested in what to pay attention to when selecting and purchasing these pieces to ensure they last as long as possible. Which details are crucial here? Is it more about the assembly, maintenance, materials, or how the furniture is best loaded?
I am looking for a comprehensive assessment and tips on how to recognize whether Malm furniture is durable and what can be done to make sure it stays that way.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello nancy,
Your question is very well formulated and interesting because the Malm series is indeed often rated quite differently. I would like to give you a comprehensive assessment this time, fairly detailed, so nothing important is left out.
Basically, Malm furniture from IKEA is typically made of particleboard with a laminate finish. This makes it affordable, lightweight, and visually appealing, but of course, it cannot be compared to solid wood in terms of durability and stability.
Here are some important points to keep in mind:
1. Assembly: Very crucial! The furniture is often quick to put together, but if screws are not tightened properly or wooden dowels are inserted crookedly, stability can be significantly compromised. Therefore, it is essential to follow the instructions carefully and be patient during assembly. Sometimes, additional reinforcement with wood glue or special corner braces can help, especially if the furniture will bear heavier loads.
2. Material and surfaces: Particleboard is sensitive to moisture and direct liquids. Be careful not to place heavy or wet items on the surface for extended periods. Minor scratches or dents are almost normal with use, but protective mats can help prevent this.
3. Load capacity: The maximum weight limits for individual furniture parts should not be exceeded. IKEA product information usually provides guidance on weight limits. Shelves and drawer slides, in particular, can suffer quickly from overloading.
4. Maintenance: Regular wiping with a slightly damp cloth is recommended. Avoid abrasive cleaners and direct sunlight, as the laminate can fade or become brittle over time.
5. Placement: Ideally, place Malm dressers on a stable, level surface. In addition to moisture, extreme heat or fluctuating temperatures can also be harmful to the material structure.
In summary: The Malm series is suitable for moderate demands but requires careful assembly and use to maintain its appearance and stability for as long as possible.
I hope this gives you a helpful first orientation! If you like, I can also offer tips on installing special connectors that can improve the lifespan.
Good luck, and feel free to get back in touch!

“What I’m really interested in from your experience is what to specifically watch out for when choosing and buying furniture if you want it to last as long as possible?”
That’s a great question!!! :-) I love the Malm series and have done quite a bit with it. The furniture has lasted over 5 years for me and still looks great!
It’s really important to follow the assembly instructions carefully and take your time. Rushing the assembly can cause small mistakes that will cause problems later on. For example, drawers may not slide properly anymore, or the whole thing wobbles.
Also, I recommend drilling out the screws and connectors if you have the right tools – some IKEA screws don’t hold as well, so using a more robust set of screws works better!
That’s exactly what I ignored at first. After a while, there were scratches and small holes – the only solution is protection or a tablecloth.
If you like, you can also apply wood preservatives afterwards, especially on the edges, to prevent fraying.
I’d also check the spot where the furniture stands. If your floor is not completely level, adjusting the feet or using small felt pads can help improve stability.
Don’t worry, with proper care the Malm series is definitely practical for everyday use and lasts longer than you’d expect! :-)

Hello everyone,
I would like to add some structured tips that nancy and others will surely find useful.
When it comes to the durability of IKEA Malm furniture, in my opinion the following points are particularly important – I have summarized them as a short checklist:
1. Quality check before purchase: Check that all parts are undamaged, especially the edges of the particleboard. Small cracks along the edges or damage to the laminate can become weak points later.
2. Assembly: As mentioned before, strictly follow the instructions! One tip: before fully tightening all screws, loosely assemble all parts first, then align everything properly and only then tighten securely. This helps avoid unnecessary stress and warping.
3. Reinforcements: Malm furniture often comes with built-in reinforcements. However, if you plan to load the furniture heavily, for example as a desk substitute or for holding heavy equipment, it is worth adding extra brackets or metal fittings on the inside.
4. Load capacity: Every piece of furniture has specific load limits for shelves and drawers. These are often between 10 and 20 kg (22 and 44 lbs) per shelf. The IKEA website or assembly manual provide exact figures.
5. Handling drawers: The drawer slides are delicate and can become uneven quickly if overloaded or used forcefully. It helps not to overfill drawers and to open and close them gently.
6. Care and cleaning: Avoid aggressive cleaning agents that could damage the laminate! Usually, a damp cotton cloth is sufficient. For stubborn stains, use a mild water-based cleaner.
Conclusion:
The Malm series offers a lot of design and functionality for a low price. For long-lasting durability, careful assembly, mindful weight management, and gentle care are absolutely essential.
I hope this sheds some light and helps you out.
Best regards!

Hello everyone,
I would like to share some personal experience here, as I also found this topic quite challenging. Especially with furniture like the Malm dressers, opinions from friends or online can be quite mixed – some praise their durability, while others report problems after only a few months.
My advice: responsible use and assembly are just as important as the material itself. What helped me most was neither overloading the furniture nor treating it roughly in a way that damages the surface (so avoiding moisture and heat).
Even though it can be annoying over time, I emptied the drawers completely once a year and cleaned the runners. In my experience, this helps maintain long-lasting functionality.
Especially with the thinner particle boards, I added the extra corner brackets that have already been mentioned here.
What I found interesting: with older models from the Malm range, you can tell that IKEA has improved the quality over recent years, for example with thicker drawer fronts or reinforced back panels. So it’s worth paying attention to the production year of the furniture – especially if you consider buying second-hand pieces.
I hope you find the perfect balance between price, design, and durability! 🙂
Best regards!
