Hello everyone, I am planning to build an IKEA Besta shelving unit myself and integrate additional lighting. My question is: what is the best way to add illuminated shelves within the Besta system?

I have done some research and know that LED strips are a common solution, but I am uncertain about how to neatly wire them, connect the power supply, and integrate the lighting into the shelving both safely and aesthetically. Are there any tips on choosing the lights, connecting to the mains power (e.g., power adapters, switches), and how to keep the installation as simple yet professional as possible?

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Quick rule of thumb: watts per meter of LED strip multiplied by the number of meters.

I often find such simple rules to be too superficial. It’s better to carefully check the spotlight specifications and current consumption of the LEDs before purchasing.

Also, you should consider where the power supply is located. Especially in enclosed furniture, it can get warm, which reduces its lifespan.

Always choose a power supply with at least a 20% safety margin.

Mount LED strips close to the shelves for better heat dissipation.

Pay attention to proper grounding of the outlet where the power supply will be connected. Safety comes first, even if the voltage is low.

For installing switches, an inline switch on the 12V cable is suitable; it is usually relatively uncomplicated and compact.

For better integration, you can also use locking connectors that allow for easy assembly and disassembly.

Additionally, I recommend choosing LED strips with an IP20 rating, as furniture lighting is usually installed indoors and is thus better protected from dust.

Don’t forget: When choosing LEDs, it’s essential to pay attention to the color rendering index (CRI)! A CRI of at least 80 ensures that colors on your shelf look natural – this is especially important for books and decorative items 🙂

I once used a strip with a CRI below 70, and everything looked quite dull. So it’s better to invest a bit more; it’s worth it!

One more tip: If you illuminate your Besta with multiple LEDs, a remote control can be very convenient—such as an IR controller or even smart home solutions.

This way, you can adjust colors, brightness, and even set schedules without having to use a switch each time.
