Hello everyone,

Due to height restrictions, our foundation slab was built deeper than originally planned. The finished floor level is still clearly above street level, but we have a wooden cladding on the façade that, according to the manufacturer, requires a 15cm (6 inches) clearance from the ground as a splash guard and is installed lower than the floor level inside the house. In other words:

The gravel perimeter drainage around the house would be lower than the street level. I hope this is clear in my drawing. Initially, I planned to have about 1m (3 feet) of gravel around the house (except for the terrace, porch, and garage) with a paved edge separating it from the lawn, which would provide a path around the house in addition to splash protection. As shown in the drawing, this would now require using retaining posts instead of paving stones and would mean a 13cm (5 inches) step down to the lawn. I imagine water might collect there since it is lower than the garden, and the step could be inconvenient over time.

What do you think? Maybe someone has an alternative suggestion.

Regards
Robin

How do you plan to separate the street from the garden?
Our finished floor level is also significantly below street level. In our case, the house essentially defines the height of the lawn/grass, and a small wall (sloping downwards in our case), located 70 cm (27.5 inches) from the street, compensates for the height difference. Plants will be placed here.

The veranda is roughly level with our floor and slightly above the street. This means the area will be paved directly. My plan was to edge the pavement here with the same paving and curb stones used around the house, and then connect the gravel there as well, using the same 13cm (5 inch) step. This way, there is direct access to the path around the house. But whether this is all practical or aesthetically pleasing...

We have the same setup, gravel as a walkway around the house.
Our landscape gardener increased our planned width from 120 cm (47 inches) to 150 cm (59 inches)... he said anything less looks cheap.
He was right: a wider path looks much more elegant. Plus, it also allows all the water to drain very well!

Of course, your drop to the street won’t be quite as steep as ours, which is 1 meter (3 feet) at the highest point.

The suggestion from ypg is great—150 centimeters (5 feet) around the house, since it shouldn’t feel too tight.

We are currently building the stairs from the street to the front door ourselves (my husband, my father, and me—slow and steady wins the race… [emoji6]).
We saw a 1-meter (3 feet) wide staircase at a neighbor's place, and it was quite narrow, so we decided to make ours a 1.5-meter (5 feet) wide landing staircase.

Better to have it a bit wider.
