Hello homebuilders,

I recently bought a semi-detached house with a 1000 m² (0.25 acres) plot. Most of it was renovated in the 1990s, but the windows are still from 1988. They are old wooden double-glazed windows. I want to replace them now. How do I measure them correctly, since I plan to order new ones with roller shutters from an online window supplier? The current windows have wooden roller shutters above the window, built into the masonry. I already have a quote for the six windows from a local window installer, but it doesn’t include measurements. The price is 2900 euros plus installation costs if ordered by 12-09. The installation would take place on 01-10 for 700 euros. I find that a bit expensive, especially since they don’t include soundproofing.

Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards,
Steven

Hello,

“a lot” is relative. Now imagine measuring the windows and then none of them fit—you would have to order new ones, which is likely much more expensive.

Measuring windows is not that simple and depends on the construction details. Basically, you measure the clear wall opening in width and height, allowing about 10 mm (0.4 inches) clearance all around.

But then it depends on the window rebate—the frame might need to be wider at times, then on the bottom connection, the windowsill, where a rebate or possibly a windowsill connection needs to be made. Also consider the drill holes for fixing the windows, and whether an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) might be installed later, which would require wider frames, and so on.

I strongly recommend you leave this to someone experienced to measure the windows; otherwise, it can get expensive.

When taking measurements, it’s important to remember that window sills might need to be added. Usually, a profile has to be screwed under the window for this. You need to consider that when determining the height.

Overall, installing windows properly is quite complex. I’m currently preparing to install windows in my garage, and you really have to be careful with sealing, compression tape, connection profiles, and so on.

There are also significant quality differences with windows, especially with wooden windows, which are expected to last longer.

Please don’t!

Replacing old double windows with new ones requires a professional, as there are simply too many factors to consider.
- Frame installation depth
- Connection for interior and exterior window sills
- Glazing, Ug value, Uw value
- Type of fittings
- What kind of sun protection? Roller blinds with crank operation (this requires a wider casing bead)
- And so on, and so forth.

I don’t accept the argument that the local window manufacturer didn’t offer soundproof glass. Everyone has it; you just have to ask.
The surcharge is about 15 euros per square meter, and even the standard off-the-shelf window they offered you already provides significantly better sound insulation than your 20-year-old windows.

Furthermore, nobody knows what is included in the 700-euro installation cost.
What does it cover?
- Removal
- Disposal
- Installation
- Certified RAL installation?
- Plastering work

In any case, I strongly advise against measuring yourself, ordering yourself, and installing yourself if you clearly have no experience and only want to rely on the internet.
