Hello everyone, I am currently planning to rearrange my apartment a bit and am considering using some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series. Since the furniture is intended for heavily used areas like the living room and hallway, I am particularly interested in how long this furniture typically lasts under such conditions.

Perhaps some of you already have experience with how durable the Hemnes furniture is with intensive use, for example in households with children or pets? It would also be helpful to know if there are specific models that are better suited than others, or if there are general tips for care and handling to extend their lifespan.

In short: How long does Ikea Hemnes typically last in high-traffic rooms, and what should users keep in mind to enjoy the furniture for as long as possible?

First of all, the Ikea Hemnes series is actually quite sturdy compared to some other Ikea furniture, which makes it especially suitable for high-traffic areas. The frame is usually made of solid pine wood, providing a stable foundation; however, we are naturally talking about furniture in the lower to mid-price range.

Typically, Hemnes furniture lasts about 5 to 8 years in frequently used rooms under normal conditions, such as daily use in living rooms or hallways. These timeframes, however, depend on the following factors:

- Quality of workmanship (assuming there are no manufacturing defects)
- Type of use (e.g., constantly loaded surfaces, seating, or storage)
- Care and cleaning (regular, gentle cleaning extends the material’s lifespan)

Especially with solid wood, slight signs of wear can appear over time, which are often perceived as a natural character of the material.

A tip: If the furniture pieces are painted or lacquered, regular maintenance with appropriate wood oils or care products is worthwhile to protect the wood from drying out and minor scratches.

In summary, the Hemnes series is a fairly durable option for heavily used areas, as long as one does not expect absolute heavy-duty performance. For long-term intensive use in a household with children, I would still recommend additional protective measures, such as padding or coasters.

If desired, I can also provide some information about typical weak points of this series.

That matches my experience quite well! We have had our Hemnes dresser in the hallway for five years now, and although it has some scratches (which almost add to its character), everything still works perfectly.

What I especially like is that small blemishes can be easily touched up with furniture wax or fine sandpaper. This is often not so straightforward with other furniture that is only veneer.

A little tip: For surfaces that see heavy use, it’s best to use pads or felt protectors under vases and decorations – this prevents unsightly pressure marks.

Overall, I can recommend Hemnes furniture for rooms with heavy use, but a bit of care and attention is definitely worthwhile.

That matches my experience as well. Hemnes holds up well for about 5 years of heavy use without major issues.

It’s important to avoid excessive moisture and to clean it regularly. Otherwise, the series is definitely solid for the price.

For furniture that gets a lot of use, I would personally recommend the more durable Malm series from Ikea.
