Hello everyone, I have a specific question for the community familiar with Ikea furniture and its material protection: How exactly does Ikea protect its Hemnes furniture against the harmful effects of sunlight?

I am especially concerned about color and material durability, as I plan to place my Hemnes dresser near a window that receives several hours of direct sunlight daily.

I would like to know if any special protective coatings or wood treatments are used during manufacturing to guard against UV radiation, or if there are recommended post-treatments that can be applied to prevent fading or damage.

Thanks in advance for your informed answers!

Ikea does not apply any special UV protection to Hemnes furniture

It’s interesting that Ikea apparently does not use any special UV protection here. This raises the question for me how Hemnes compares to other solid wood furniture in the same price range.

Sometimes an additional care oil or a special UV protective varnish can help, but it should be well tested beforehand

Such recommendations make sense; however, the durability and visual effects of these after-treatments are often not clearly documented.

I suspect that Ikea deliberately opts for an affordable finish that only provides basic protection. For stronger UV protection, one would probably need to invest more in specialized products.

I would also be interested to know if anyone has long-term experience regarding how much Hemnes furniture actually deteriorates visually after 5–10 years of direct sunlight exposure.

Hey everyone, really exciting topic! 😄 Two years ago, I placed a Hemnes bench in my conservatory with lots of sunlight on it every day. Sure, you can see some slight discoloration, but I actually find that kind of nice – it gives character! 👍

I also use a maintenance oil that’s specifically made for painted wooden furniture, which helps prevent drying out. If you apply it regularly, the wood stays more flexible and the color stays beautiful longer.

Important: Don’t use harsh cleaners, or you could damage the paint. And if the furniture does fade too much, you can always refinish it with a new coat of paint, though that does require some work.

So, don’t be too worried about sunlight – a little sun exposure is okay, especially if you maintain the furniture properly!

Hello Ginolis,

I would like to add that solid wood furniture from Ikea, such as Hemnes, is coated with a protective varnish that guards against moisture and scratches, but this varnish is not specifically designed to provide UV protection.

This means that prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading and slight changes in color tone.

Therefore, it is advisable not to place the furniture directly in the sun or, if unavoidable, to regularly treat it with a care oil that contains UV filters.

If possible, window films or textile elements like blinds, which can be used flexibly, are also suitable for sun protection.
