Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific question about cleaning and dust removal for furniture, especially the Billy shelves from IKEA. How should the Billy shelves be properly cleaned to remove household dust without damaging the surface or material?

I am particularly interested in effective methods to thoroughly remove dust from the corners and edges of the shelves. This includes both the use of cleaning agents and suitable tools or aids.

Additionally, I would like to know if there are any special care instructions I should follow during cleaning to keep the shelves looking good for a long time and to avoid stains or damage.

I would be very grateful for any tips and personal experiences!

Hello everyone,

I would like to provide some background on this topic, as I have personally used and maintained Billy shelves for many years. House dust is best managed through regular care.

First, I recommend emptying the shelves before cleaning. This makes it easier to access all surfaces. Vacuum cleaners with small brush nozzles are especially effective for removing dust from grooves or edges.

That’s exactly right. I have also found that excessive moisture can damage the edges. Therefore, always wring out the microfiber cloth thoroughly, rinse it several times, and follow up by wiping with a dry cloth.

Additionally, for shelves that are frequently used, it is also helpful to dust the back panel with a soft feather duster. For some hard-to-reach areas, small calligraphy brushes or specialized cleaning brushes from art supplies work well.

The definitely wrong method is using aggressive cleaners or abrasive cloths, as they can cause the surface to fade or scratch.

Finally, a tip for prevention: a moisture absorber in the room, combined with regular ventilation, can generally reduce dust build-up.

If you like, I can also prepare a checklist for regular cleaning.

Does anyone here know a reliable source or manufacturer specifications for this?

Yes, IKEA provides all technical information about the materials used on their website in the care instructions. They specifically mention the melamine resin coating, which is generally resistant to moisture and chemicals but should not be exposed to prolonged wetness.

I can only emphasize that. Additionally, I recommend the following cleaning steps:

- Thoroughly vacuum loose dust with a brush attachment before cleaning
- Use a microfiber cloth for damp cleaning, only slightly moist
- Pay attention to water temperature when cleaning: lukewarm is best, avoid very hot or cold water
- Always dry immediately with a clean, dry cloth

Small brushes and feather dusters, as already mentioned, work perfectly here. Also, be careful not to wet the back panel too often, as it usually has less coating and is less water-resistant.

Can anyone share if stains or discolorations occurred after cleaning? I am interested to know if improper cleaning has caused visible damage in any cases.
