I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf from IKEA, but after putting it together, it feels relatively unstable and wobbly, which is a bit concerning. The wall brackets are installed, but that alone doesn’t provide the necessary stability. The shelf creaks under load and tends to tip when I apply pressure by leaning on it or placing more weight on the top shelf. My question is directed at experienced DIYers and bookshelf assemblers: How can you properly fix an unstable Billy bookshelf so that it stands securely and makes no noise under load? What reinforcements or setups are recommended to eliminate this instability without completely disassembling the furniture? I would appreciate any tips, including advice on how to check and possibly improve the internal structure or joints.

Usually, it helps to first tighten all screws and wall plugs properly. Often, some of them loosen during assembly. Wall brackets also need to be positioned at the correct height. If that is not enough, you can attach a plywood panel to the back wall, which significantly improves stability.

That’s a good starting point. I’ve often experienced that the issue is simply loose screws.

Additionally, if a Billy bookcase feels unstable, I recommend first checking whether the back panel is correctly positioned and undamaged — the thin hardboard provides most of the lateral stability. If the back panel looks like a crossword puzzle or can be easily dented, it’s worth replacing or reinforcing it.

That’s an excellent idea. Alternatively, metal braces can be installed inside the corners to strengthen the joints between the shelves and the side panels. It’s also important to secure the bookcase to solid walls on either side or to the actual wall, which greatly reduces tipping.

If you’re comfortable with programming or DIY solutions: small rubber pads on the contact surfaces can also reduce creaking noises. Under load, it’s worth checking the connections several times, as these bookcases can handle quite a bit when all joints are properly tightened.

I can completely understand how annoying a wobbly Billy shelf can be. Some time ago, I had a similar issue at home, and it really frustrated me as well.

In addition to the already very good tips, I would add that you should also pay attention to how the shelf is loaded. Uneven loading puts more stress on certain parts of the frame and increases instability. If possible, place heavy books at the bottom and lighter items on top.

It can also help to secure the shelf to the wall with screws or, if the wall structure does not allow for that, to use so-called anti-tip straps, which are very effective at preventing tipping. This method is also a safety measure, especially if there are children in the household.

I know these small details are sometimes overlooked, but they make daily life much easier. Even just a careful, thorough check of all connection points and a sensible weight distribution can make a big difference. I hope you manage to solve the problem soon! 🙂
