Hello everyone,

I am currently considering how the classic IKEA Hemnes furniture can be integrated into modern interior styles. The Hemnes series has a rather traditional Scandinavian-rustic design with solid wood fronts, which at first glance might seem somewhat at odds with clear, minimalist, or industrial living concepts.

I am especially interested in how these pieces can be combined to create a modern atmosphere despite their more traditional style. Are there proven design approaches, for example regarding color, accessories, or furniture combinations, that make Hemnes items look contemporary? Or are they better suited to more classic, cozy interior concepts?

I look forward to hearing your experiences, ideas, and possibly critical comments on the limitations of integrating Hemnes furniture into modern interiors.

Sure, Filippo, I’m happy to share this:

I have a white Hemnes dresser. To enhance the modern feel, I fitted it with matte black handles that are very minimalist. The walls are painted in light gray, and the rugs are in soft cream tones.

I also combine the furniture with modern lighting – sleek floor lamps with clean lines and LED bulbs. Textiles like cushions and curtains have geometric black-and-white patterns to give the space a contemporary coziness.

Plants in simple white pots add life without detracting from the style.

In my opinion, this creates a nice balance between the traditional Hemnes look and a modern interior concept.

The key is to avoid cluttering the overall appearance and to work with targeted accents.

I believe the topic of Hemnes and modern interior design is also a matter of perspective. For me, furniture is not just a design object but a daily companion that should primarily be functional and durable.

Hemnes furniture is sturdy and visually honest. Of course, you can present it in a modern way by deliberately creating contrasts. However, you can also embrace the charm and warmth of the wood – this makes a big difference, especially in modern, often cool-feeling apartments.

For fans of industrial styles: a rough metal chair next to a Hemnes dresser often creates more visual interest than a perfectly smooth, flawless look.

Personally, I like when Hemnes pieces don’t become anonymous but retain their story and atmosphere. This makes a home feel lively and personal.

What are your experiences with the everyday practicality of this furniture in modern living spaces?

Hi keokeo and everyone reading,

I’d like to add some thoughts regarding the combination: Hemnes furniture works particularly well in modern interiors when you play consciously with color and materials. For example:

- Wall colors in pastel tones or soft natural shades go very well with the white or natural Hemnes options.
- Metallic accessories in brass or copper bring a modern elegance that lightens up the classic style.
- By carefully placing artworks, you can shift the focus away from the traditional furniture look and create a modern atmosphere.

Also, lighting design should not be underestimated. Good room lighting with multiple light sources that create accents adds a lot of ambiance.

If you rearrange or experiment often, Hemnes furniture is a safe choice anyway due to its timeless design, even with changing interior styles.

Hemnes furniture can be made modern by using simple colors and combining it with minimalist pieces. This creates a fresh and contemporary look. Often, that is enough.
