atillabe3521 Jan 2021 18:37Hello everyone,
I am planning to install Ikea Metod wall cabinets on a drywall (plasterboard) wall at my home. Since the cabinets are quite heavy, I want to ensure the mounting is as secure as possible. My wall consists of a single-layer drywall panel with wooden studs behind it, but not all studs are accessible or positioned ideally for mounting the cabinets.
My specific questions:
- What fasteners are safe to use if you can only attach to the drywall panel itself, meaning no direct screwing into wooden or metal studs is possible?
- If anchors are used in the drywall, which types are recommended (e.g., toggle bolts, metal anchors) and what load can each safely support?
- Should additional reinforcement be added to the wall (for example, an OSB panel in front of the drywall), and what is the best way to install it?
I would appreciate any experience-based advice as well as practical tips on the correct procedure—such as safety recommendations, installation instructions, product suggestions, etc.
Thank you very much in advance!

Hello,
In general, I recommend attaching Metod wall cabinets directly to the underlying studs. Screwing only into the drywall itself is not strong enough to support the weights that such cabinets can carry later on.
If the studs are not ideally positioned, you can consider the following options:
- Reinforcing the wall with additional wooden battens or OSB boards, which are screwed onto the existing drywall. This reinforcement must also be anchored to the studs.
- Using toggle bolts or metal anchors provides some load capacity, but only about 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs) per anchor at most – which can quickly become insufficient for fully loaded kitchen cabinets.
It is also important that the mounting points are distributed as widely as possible to spread the forces across multiple anchors.
My advice is therefore: definitely plan for a reinforcement panel that is screwed onto the studs. Afterward, you can securely fasten the cabinets with conventional wood screws. This way, you are on the safe side and avoid damage from overloading.

Hello atillabe35,
I would like to address your question about the safe installation of the Ikea Metod wall cabinets on drywall in detail, as there are many potential mistakes and improper mounting can quickly lead to dangerous situations.
The load from the cabinets depends greatly on their contents, especially for kitchen cabinets fully loaded with dishes and appliances, you should assume a load capacity of at least 50 kg (110 lbs) per unit, possibly more. Now regarding the drywall:
- Drywall panels alone hardly support any significant load – no matter how heavy they may seem. They are not designed to carry heavy weights.
- Ideally, as already mentioned, the cabinets should be fastened directly into the studs (wooden or metal) of the wall structure. Since you say not all studs are accessible, the question is: How are the studs distributed? Can you locate more studs using a stud finder or by removing part of the drywall?
If reinforcement is desired, for a drywall construction I would recommend the following approach:
- Expose the studs and attach an OSB or plywood panel (at least 12 mm (0.5 inches) thick) that fully covers the area where the cabinets will be mounted.
- This panel is fastened directly to the studs with long screws.
- Then the cabinets can be mounted to the OSB panel using standard wood screws, which are entirely sufficient in this case.
If attaching a panel is not possible, you can use special drywall screws with toggle anchors. But these should be secured with at least five anchors per cabinet, and the cabinets should be kept as light as possible.
Also be sure to ensure the cabinets are level and the holes for the anchors are drilled precisely to guarantee optimal anchor seating.
Do you already have a plan or sketch of the wall? That would help provide more targeted advice.

Hello atillabe35,
I would like to add to the previous posts with a brief step-by-step tutorial on safely mounting Ikea Metod wall cabinets on drywall (gypsum board) walls, especially since this topic is often handled inadequately:
- Step 1: Check the wall
- Use a stud finder to locate wooden or metal studs behind the drywall.
- Mark these carefully on the wall.
- Step 2: Plan reinforcement
- If the studs are poorly positioned, remove the drywall panel at the intended location (partial removal).
- Attach an OSB or plywood panel (at least 12 mm (½ inch) thick), fastening it with long screws to at least 3-4 studs.
- The panel must be level so the cabinets can sit flush.
- Step 3: Cabinet fastening
- Use wood screws with pan or round heads that are long enough (at least 6 cm (2½ inches)) and suitable for the cabinet back panel.
- Screw into the OSB panel or directly into the studs, never only into the drywall!
- Step 4: Use alternative anchors
- If reinforcement is not possible, use toggle bolts (metal) designed for gypsum boards.
- Use enough anchors, at least 5 per cabinet, to distribute the load.
- Keep in mind that cabinets mounted this way should be loaded more lightly.
- Step 5: After mounting
- Check the firmness by gently pulling and tighten screws if needed.
- Avoid overloading with heavy items.
I fully agree with this—when choosing fasteners, it’s better to over-dimension than to under-dimension.
If you like, I can send you a list of recommended anchors and screws.
