Hello everyone, I have a specific concern about preventing the Billy shelves from slipping. In my current setup, the shelves sometimes shift slightly under load, especially when I place heavier items like books or binders. I am looking for a secure, ideally simple and reversible method to fix the shelves firmly in the Billy units. Are there any proven techniques or additional fasteners you would recommend to reliably prevent slipping? Ideally, I would prefer a solution that does not leave visible marks or damage on the shelves and can be implemented with commonly available tools or materials. Thank you in advance!

Are there proven techniques or additional fastenings you can recommend to reliably prevent slipping?Hello Effendi9,
Based on my experience, I would like to share two practical methods that I have used multiple times in both office and residential settings to secure BILLY shelves against slipping:
Option 1: Hard plastic shelf supports with locking mechanisms. These are available as retrofit kits that can be installed without drilling. They are small, fit into existing drill holes, and mechanically lock the shelf in place. The shelf can no longer slide but can still be easily removed.
Option 2: Metal or plastic angle brackets mounted on the inside of the shelf walls. It is important to measure the position precisely so that the shelf sits flush and no tension occurs. For this method, a cordless screwdriver with a small bit set is useful. After disassembly, small drill holes remain that can be easily filled.
Additionally, narrow strips of foam rubber or silicone can be glued between the shelf and side panels to increase friction further.
I recommend measuring the exact width and depth of the interior shelf dimensions before installation, as BILLY shelves vary slightly depending on the version and production year.
If you want more details about the fastening elements, I can gladly recommend specific models and sources.

The anti-slip pads and small brackets suggested here work well for me, especially the pads, which increase safety without much effort.
The most important thing is to be clear before purchasing or modifying how much you want to alter the shelving unit. For me, it was important to keep it without drilling so that I could easily disassemble the shelf when moving.
I think it’s great how many thoughtful tips you’ve already received. Don’t be discouraged by them and try the pads first – if that’s not enough, you can always add more reinforcements later.
Good luck, and if you decide to try it, please share how it worked out for you! 🙂
