Hello everyone,

I am facing the task of replacing the drawer slides on my IKEA Malm chest of drawers. Specifically, it concerns the metal roller slides, which have become somewhat stiff and no longer run smoothly.

My question is: How do I properly replace Malm drawer slides? What should I especially pay attention to in order to remove the old slides cleanly and install the new ones optimally, without the drawer sticking or wobbling?

What type of new slides fits this chest of drawers best? Are there differences in quality or installation that I should consider?

I appreciate detailed tips on the procedure, recommended materials, and advice on potential pitfalls during this replacement. Thanks in advance!

IKEA Malm dressers typically come with standard metal roller slides. If you want to replace them, I recommend using the same or compatible upgrade slides from IKEA.

Here’s how to proceed:

1. Fully remove the drawer from the dresser and place it on a flat surface.
2. Use a screwdriver to remove all screws from the old slides.
3. Carefully detach the slides; if glued, gently use a scraper to help.
4. Mount the new slides with the appropriate screws exactly in the same position as the old ones, using the existing screw holes as a guide.

Important: Do not overtighten the screws to avoid damaging the wood.

There are indeed quality differences, but genuine IKEA slides are best matched to the Malm dresser. Cheap alternatives often result in poor operation or premature wear.

Also, make sure the slides are clean and free of grease to ensure smooth drawer movement.

That’s really good advice! If the screws are tightened too much, the wood can split or warp – which you definitely want to avoid with a Malm dresser.

I recently replaced my drawer slides and applied some butter or a special lubricating grease to the rails – not sure if IKEA recommends this, but it made the drawers glide really smoothly afterwards! 🙂

Another little tip: when reinserting the drawer, lift it slightly and align it gently on both sides in the track – this prevents the drawer from being crooked or sticking.

So: proper preparation, the right tools (a small Phillips screwdriver is usually enough), and a little patience work wonders. Good luck!

Here is a brief guide based on my experience:

1. Removing the drawer: Pull the drawer fully out, then ideally release the locking clips on the slides from underneath, if present. If not, as already described, remove the drawer completely.

2. Removing the old slides: Unscrew the screws and take off the metal slides. If they are stuck, a flat prying tool can help to avoid damaging the wood.

3. Cleaning the installation area: Use a damp cloth to remove all sawdust and dirt so that the new slides can sit flush.

4. Aligning the new slides: Sounds simple, but this is often the critical point. The new slides must be positioned exactly on the old screw holes or the designated mounting points specified by IKEA. For most Malm dressers, keep the distance to the floor and side walls precise, so the drawer runs perfectly later on.

5. Screw in evenly and not too tightly. If possible, use the original IKEA screws or screws with the same diameter and length to avoid damaging the wood.

6. After installation: Slowly push the drawer back in and check the operation. If it sticks, check the alignment again and inspect the slide for damage.

Common mistakes:
- Ordering wrong slides or causing too much damage to the old screw holes
- Uneven tightening of screws
- Insufficient cleaning before installation

I have replaced Malm slides several times and strongly recommend carefully checking the old screws and holes, repairing with wood filler if needed before mounting the new slides.
