Hello everyone, I recently noticed that the hinges on my IKEA Malm drawers are no longer closing properly. I am considering replacing the hinges completely, as a repair probably won’t be sufficient. My question is: How do I professionally replace the hinges on Malm drawers?
I am familiar with the basic attachment points (usually screws on the sides of the drawer and the cabinet), but I am unsure if I need to remove the entire drawer, how to best detach the old hinges and install new ones without damaging the front or sides. I am also curious if any special tools are required and if there are differences in hinges from different production years.
I would really appreciate a step-by-step guide or tips from experienced users! Thanks in advance.

Hello Zyaire44,
great that you described the problem so clearly! When replacing the hinges on MALM drawers, it is indeed helpful to remove the drawer completely to access the screws easily and avoid accidental damage.
The following steps will help:
1. Pull the drawer out as far as possible.
2. Tilt the drawer slightly upwards and then pull it out completely—this will give full access to the cabinet.
3. Remove the screws that attach the old hinges to both the drawer and the cabinet.
4. Attach the new hinges in the same positions and tighten the screws securely.
It is important not to overtighten the screws to avoid damaging the material. If you don’t have the right tool, a Phillips screwdriver with a small to medium-sized tip usually works well.
The MALM hinges have remained fairly consistent over the years, so standard hinges generally fit for replacement.
If you want, I can also give you tips on how to adjust the drawer front if needed. What tools do you have in your toolbox? 🙂

It feels great to do it yourself and then have the drawer close perfectly afterwards! Making small adjustments to the hinges so everything runs smoothly is also really satisfying!
Tip: Take your time, especially when reattaching the drawer, and don’t give up right away if something gets stuck. Practice makes perfect ;-)
