Hello everyone,
I recently bought a MALM drawer chest set from IKEA and now I’m wondering: What is the most practical assembly sequence when putting the individual parts together?
The instructions do show an order to follow, but sometimes it seems more convenient to rearrange certain steps—especially when inserting the drawers or attaching the back panels.
I’m interested in your experience: Is there an optimal assembly order for MALM drawer chests, particularly regarding stability, time efficiency, and ease of handling? Do you have any useful tips that go beyond the official instructions?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Basically, I recommend following the assembly exactly in the order of the official instructions, as they have been tested for ease of use and safety.
However, with MALM dressers, there are some steps that can be reasonably done earlier: for example, it is advisable to fully assemble the side panels and back panel before inserting the drawers to create a stable base structure.
It is important to always install the back panel last, but before the drawers. This ensures the frame has the necessary stability. Installing the drawers afterwards makes handling easier and prevents unnecessary scratching.

I would like to share my experience on the optimal assembly sequence for MALM dressers in a structured way:
1. Sort and check parts: Before assembly, inspect all screws, panels, and fittings.
2. Build the carcass: First, connect the side panels with the bottom and top panels, ensuring everything is square.
3. Install the back panel: It is best to fix the back panel immediately after assembling the carcass, preferably with a stapler or screws, depending on the model.
4. Assemble the drawers: You can build the drawers in parallel with the carcass assembly.
5. Insert the drawers: Only insert the drawers once the carcass is stable.
Common mistakes include inserting the drawers too early, which makes handling more difficult, or loosening the back panel fasteners, which reduces stability.

Oh, I think the best thing about MALM is that you don’t even break a sweat while assembling it! 🙂
That said, it’s true: first assemble the frame straight and secure it well, then add the back panel for stability.
After that, attach the drawers – it almost feels like you’re getting ready to move in. 😉
By the way, if you don’t tighten the screws too much, you can adjust the parts better without scratching anything.
