Hello everyone, I have a technically specific question: I own a Malm desk from IKEA, and unfortunately some of the legs are damaged. The legs have stripped or cracked threads, which means the desk is no longer stable. I want to replace the damaged Malm legs myself but have little experience with furniture repairs. My question is: What exact steps should I follow to safely and permanently replace the Malm legs, and what tools are absolutely necessary? Are there any special considerations for this model, for example regarding the threads or the attachment method? I want to avoid the desk wobbling or becoming unstable after the repair. Thanks for any help and advice!

That’s great that there are such special inserts available! 🙂 I once repaired a broken Malm table leg myself using wooden inserts exactly like that – it has held perfectly for almost 2 years. The important thing, as Domau0 says, is to work carefully and not to overtighten. After that, the table even feels more stable than before! Good luck, you can do it! 🙂

Insert wooden threaded inserts, then screw in the new feet. Always use some glue when the thread is stripped. Tighten, but do not overtighten.

That's reassuring to hear. I think it’s great that you don’t have to replace something right away for such minor damage. Sometimes these success stories just make you more optimistic. Fingers crossed that you get through the repair without much hassle, manric!

If the original MALM legs are no longer available, there are third-party suppliers offering modular replacement legs that can be fitted – often including a rubber pad to prevent scratches.

There are adapter legs from third-party suppliers that use modified fastenings.

Maybe a good alternative if you prioritize stability and want something durable right away.

I really appreciate how everyone here is working hard to find practical solutions. Manric, if you ever feel unsure about how to handle the tools properly or how to install the thread smoothly, just let us know. Even if it sounds challenging at first, you will definitely manage it! 🙂
