ᐅ How can I protect IKEA Hemnes furniture from sunlight exposure?

Hello everyone,
I have several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces in my apartment (including dressers and shelves), some of which are placed directly by the window and therefore exposed to strong sunlight. I have read that prolonged UV exposure can cause discoloration or even slight damage to the surface, especially on light wood or painted finishes.
My question is: What is the best way to protect my Hemnes furniture from sunlight without having to completely darken the windows? Are there any special protective products or measures you would recommend? I am particularly interested in whether there are varnishes, films, or care products that are suitable without affecting the natural wood appearance.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

To supplement these notes:
- UV protection films should ideally be optically clear to avoid reducing indoor brightness.
- Self-adhesive films sometimes offer protection for up to 5 years.
- Furniture oil and furniture wax are mainly care products and do not provide full UV protection.
- Alternatively, so-called UV-protection varnishes for wood surfaces can be used; however, these are more difficult to apply yourself and usually alter the appearance of the furniture due to a varnish gloss.
Conclusion: A combination of UV-protection window film and regular furniture maintenance is practical and effective.

Hello everyone, I’ll summarize this clearly:
1. Window films: Clear UV filters, invisible, easy to install.
2. Maintenance: Furniture wax (possibly with UV blockers) protects the surface.
3. UV-protective coatings: offer maximum protection but require professional application.
4. Other options: combine furniture with curtains or blinds.
A common mistake is only oiling or waxing the furniture without protecting the windows. This only helps the wood to a limited extent.
And very important: during the peak summer months, try to shield the strong sunlight indoors or rearrange the furniture if possible.
Good luck!

I applied thin, UV-protective window films to my Hemnes shelves. That sounds really great! Window film is basically the superhero of sun protection for furniture 🤓👍
And thanks to caring for the wood with wax, it stays pleasantly soft and well protected.
I’d definitely do the same if the sun were shining in so strongly at my place.

Alternatively, so-called UV-protective varnishes for wood surfaces are an option, but these are more difficult to apply yourself and usually change the appearance of the furniture due to a glossy finish. Thanks for the summary! UV-protective varnishes sound interesting, but I have some concerns about the altered appearance and the effort involved. Has anyone had experience with these varnishes specifically for IKEA Hemnes furniture? Does the typical light look change significantly, or does it stay more matte and natural? My goal is to preserve as natural an appearance as possible.
