Good morning everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: How can I effectively protect my IKEA Billy shelves from moisture? Specifically, I want to place my shelves in a relatively damp room (a basement with slight humidity). I know that Billy shelves are mainly made of particleboard, which is prone to swelling or warping when exposed to moisture. Therefore, I am looking for practical solutions to extend the lifespan of my shelves. Are there particular sealants, varnishes, or protective measures that have proven effective? Or are dehumidifiers alone sufficient? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Sometimes, a simple vapor barrier on the wall behind the shelf is sufficient. This helps reduce moisture in the immediate area. If there is no perfect solution, at least reduce the problem.

This is amazing, all the information you’ve gathered! 🙂 I would also recommend protecting the shelves with a film or waterproof liners. Especially if water spills nearby, this prevents direct contact with the particleboard. Additionally, it helps if the room isn’t completely sealed so that air can circulate. 🙂

I would recommend a combination of water-repellent acrylic paint and a polyurethane (PU) sealant. PU is a bit more expensive but offers very good moisture resistance. Alternatively, epoxy resin can also be used as a sealant, although it is often too complex for DIY projects.

I would also like to emphasize that preventive measures such as vinegar-based cleaners or fungicidal sprays are only advisable in specific cases, for example, when mold traces actually appear. I would not recommend using them just as a precaution. It is better to rely on mechanical protective measures and dehumidification, as these are more effective in the long term.

That’s true, I work professionally with wood-based materials and can confirm that. It is important with coatings to treat all edges as well as the back side. Moisture often penetrates the material from the back.

Thank you for the many helpful responses! I find Sinan-meo’s comment about the back wall and moisture protection from the wall side especially interesting, as well as the tip about combining acrylic paint with PU sealing. I will also remember not to place the shelves directly on the floor and to ensure air circulation. If anyone has any advice on specific products or mixing ratios, I would be very grateful! 🙂
