Hello everyone,
I have several Ikea Metod base cabinets in my kitchen and want to prevent long-term damage caused by moisture, such as swelling, warping, or mold on the cabinets.
How can I avoid moisture damage to Ikea Metod base cabinets, especially around the sink and dishwasher areas? I’m not only looking for tips on daily use but also whether it makes sense to apply sealants, use specific materials between the wall and cabinets, or implement ventilation measures.
Practical experience or technical advice on preparing and maintaining the cabinet fronts and carcasses would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hello Ronikla,
I understand why this topic is on your mind – I went through something similar when I renovated my kitchen.
In my experience, it’s effective not only to rely on technical solutions but also to pay close attention to usage. Fix small leaks immediately and regularly check for moisture inside the cabinets.
Additionally, I installed a vapor barrier film underneath the countertop to reduce moisture reaching the cabinet carcasses from above. It requires some effort but provides peace of mind. If you’re investing in a permanent living solution, it’s worth doing.
Finally, good extraction and ventilation in the kitchen also help – they dry the air faster and prevent moisture from settling easily.

I think it’s okay to show a little care for the cabinets sometimes 😅
- Simply apply silicone or sealing tapes to areas where water frequently splashes.
- A small moisture-resistant mat on the cabinet floor helps keep wet sponges under control.
- Keep things fresh by occasionally airing out the cabinets, even if it’s a hassle.
You shouldn’t underestimate Ikea Metod cabinet systems – with a bit of attention, they really last longer than you might expect. 😉

If the area under the sink is sealed and well insulated, moisture usually stays there and does not damage the cabinets. Simple water damage often occurs due to faulty or loose seals, so I would prioritize checking those.
