Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to convert my IKEA BESTÅ into a more practical wine rack – focusing on a clever, sturdy partitioning that allows bottles to be stored securely while still being flexible enough for different bottle sizes. My goal is a modification that doesn’t permanently damage the unit but is still visually appealing and stores the wine bottles horizontally so the cork doesn’t dry out. Does anyone have experience or tips on the best way to modify the BESTÅ? For example, using shelves, special holders, metal grids, or custom builds? I would really appreciate any ideas, especially if you have insights on stability, materials, or fixing methods. Thanks in advance for your advice!
Super exciting project, especially since the BESTÅ system offers so much flexibility! 😍 I modified my BESTÅ by fitting wooden slat wine bottle holders into individual compartments, which you can easily remove. This keeps the bottles securely in place and also allows for different uses if needed. It was important for me to firmly attach the holders using brackets, so no loose parts. Additionally, you can add inexpensive foam padding to protect the bottles – this greatly improves the setup and prevents rattling. If you have some DIY skills, you can create really stylish holders with a bit of sandpaper and wood stain! The BESTÅ material is easy to work with, so grab your plane and don’t worry, it will turn out great! 😃🍷
I understand that when it comes to a wine rack, safety and flexibility are especially important. It’s not always easy to modify furniture, especially when the goal is to maintain both stability and visual appeal. I found it helpful, particularly with modular systems like BESTÅ, to focus on the key functions – proper storage of the bottles (lying down to keep the cork from drying out) and the ability to occasionally rearrange the compartments. Interestingly, I’ve also noticed issues when people put in too many loose parts – this can quickly look untidy and affect stability. My advice would be to plan ahead how many bottles you want to store and consider whether you might be better off with fewer, but more sturdy inserts. Maybe you can also use some pieces from the original IKEA accessories, which often fit well.

It’s not always easy to modify furniture, especially when the goal is to maintain both stability and visual appeal. That hits the nail on the head! I’m just wondering: how practical are these DIY inserts really in the long run? Often, there’s a lack of scientific data on load limits or material fatigue. IKEA furniture like the BESTÅ is actually designed for standard uses and not necessarily for heavier loads or varying bottle sizes. It would be more helpful if people shared exact dimensions and material specifications so the design can be better assessed.
Furthermore, I’m curious if anyone has specifically studied load capacity considering the bottle arrangement. It’s not uncommon for furniture to be permanently altered by modifications, which can reduce stability. Do you think this is negligible, or am I being overly cautious? I believe that especially with heavy bottles and multiple layers, more attention should be given to safety and stability rather than just appearance.
