Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a few MALM furniture pieces from IKEA and have been using them in my apartment for several months now. I’ve noticed that the surfaces and drawers already show signs of wear, even though I believe I have been using them normally. My question is quite specific: How can I make MALM furniture last longer? What handling tips, maintenance advice, or structural modifications would you recommend to prevent the furniture from wearing out so quickly? I’m especially interested in tips for drawer slides, surface care, and ways to reinforce the furniture. Thanks in advance!
I appreciate that you are sharing practical tips here, but I think it’s also important to critically consider possible modifications to Malm furniture.

If you need to drill new holes, you might lose the warranty, and the furniture could become more prone to damage. Many paint finishes are not truly breathable, which can lead to peeling. In this case, I would recommend using proven furniture waxes and occasionally polishing instead of applying thick layers of paint.
Does anyone know if this significantly changes the assembly, or can the old drawer slides simply be replaced?
Exactly! Longevity also comes from careful maintenance. 🙂 I can only recommend fighting wear and tear on your own furniture by using self-adhesive felt pads on most contact points. Especially with MALM, which offers a lot for the price, these small upgrades bring added enjoyment. Moisture is another important topic that many forget—good ventilation in the rooms helps here. This greatly extends the lifespan!
To revisit the idea of felt pads and self-adhesive felt protectors: Are there any tips on how to attach them best so they don’t come off after a short time? And are they also recommended for the inside of drawers to prevent damage when pulling them out? I’m curious whether this affects the drawer mechanism.

Yes, they can also be used on the inside of drawers, especially where wood rubs against wood or metal. Do not use pads that are too thick, as this can cause the drawers to stick. They work well and last longer than expected.
