Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to modify some IKEA Hemnes furniture in our home to make it safer and more suitable for our young children. Specifically, I am looking for the best ways to protect sharp edges, drawers, doors, and any parts that might fall out, without drastically changing the appearance of the furniture.
Does anyone have experience with child-friendly modifications for this furniture series? I am especially interested in tips on attaching protective elements, securing the furniture against tipping over, and making wooden edges or handles safer for children. Methods that are easily reversible would also be helpful in case we want to use the furniture normally again later.
I would greatly appreciate any specific recommendations regarding materials, tools, or techniques. Thank you in advance!

This is generally an important topic, especially because Hemnes furniture is made of wood with clean lines and is relatively sturdy, but its sharp corners and drawer design can still pose risks.
Here are some tips on how to make your Hemnes furniture more child-friendly:
- Attach edge protectors: Use self-adhesive foam edge guards or flexible silicone corner protectors that cushion the corners. These are usually available in transparent or wood-look finishes.
- Drawer locks: There are special child safety locks that can be installed inside the furniture to prevent children from opening drawers unsupervised. These are particularly useful for Hemnes dressers.
- Secure against tipping: IKEA often provides safety straps, or you can use universal furniture anchors to fix heavy Hemnes cabinets to the wall, reducing the risk of tipping.
- Handles: If the wooden edges of the handles are too sharp, you can cover them with soft silicone or rubber bumpers to prevent injuries.
- Paint and finishes: If modifications are necessary, make sure to use non-toxic, child-safe paints or finishes that do not contain harmful substances.
If you have any questions about any of these points, I’m happy to help.

I am especially interested in tips for attaching protective elements, securing against tipping, and designing wooden edges or handles to be child-safe.To prevent tipping, using wall anchors is essential, especially for larger cabinets. A very sturdy furniture safety strap anchored to the wall effectively prevents tipping. It is important to use appropriate wall plugs and screws for installation – drywall anchors, for example, are not sufficient for secure furniture fastening.
For sharp corners, I recommend flexible silicone edge protectors instead of foam padding, as they are more durable, easier to clean, and robust. These are also available in wood tones that blend in well. For drawers, magnetic locks or latches that require some pressure to open (manageable for adults but difficult for children) are suitable.
If you don’t mind a bit more effort, you can even replace handles with beveled or softly rounded alternatives. All modifications should remain reversible, as you wish – for example, by using adhesive mounting without drilling.
This way, you can adapt the furniture well to the needs of small children without compromising the overall appearance.

For sharp corners, I recommend flexible silicone edges over foam pads, as they are more durable, easier to clean, and sturdy. These are very good tips. I would add that when attaching edge protection, it is essential to ensure the furniture surface is cleaned thoroughly and precisely before applying the adhesive. Otherwise, the protection will not stick properly and may come off quickly – which is counterproductive when it comes to safety.
Additionally, I think it makes sense to consider the habits and behavior of children since some drawer locks can be easily removed if they are not complex enough.
So, a brief summary of recommendations:
- Attach safety straps to all large furniture pieces
- Use high-quality, firm adhesive edge protectors
- Fit drawers with childproof locks
- Regularly check that the safety measures are still intact
I also added soft silicone bumpers to our handles, which turned out to be practical – they cushion impacts and prevent skin scratches.
If you have any questions about specific products or installation instructions, feel free to ask.
