Lunar69Hello everyone, I am currently planning my latest setup with Ikea Besta shelving units and want to equip them optimally with power outlets and cable grommets. My specific question is: How can I integrate power outlets and cable openings into the Besta modules in a way that is both visually discreet and functionally efficient?
I am particularly interested in the following points:
- What type of cable grommets or cable ducts fit best within the Besta cabinet structure?
- Are there proven methods for unobtrusively mounting power strips, for example inside the units or on the back panels?
- How can I ensure a clean, safe wiring installation without damaging the back panels or shelves of the cabinets?
- Which materials or accessories from Ikea or third-party suppliers are recommended?
I would appreciate tips on specific tools, drilling techniques, and potential issues during installation, especially based on practical experience. Thank you in advance for your support!

My specific question is: How can I integrate power outlets and cable grommets into the Besta modules so that they are both visually unobtrusive and functionally optimal? That is a very good question with several aspects to consider. First, I recommend understanding the cabinet structure thoroughly: Besta modules are usually made from MDF panels with a decorative foil, which are relatively easy to work with if you use the right tools.
1. Cable grommets: There are special rubber cable grommets that can be installed on the side or back panels without major modifications. For Besta, a common position is either at the lower part of the back or on the side near the back panel. Stainless steel or plastic grommets with dust covers are advisable as they do not interfere with the overall appearance.
2. Power outlet integration: Many people use flat power strips mounted inside the cabinet. These can be attached either with hook-and-loop tape or screws (provided the back panel is strong enough). Alternatively, you can cut a recess to install a power strip flush, but precise measurements and a guide template are helpful for this.
3. Tools & procedure: For drilling and cutouts, I recommend a hole saw with a medium diameter (about 60–80 mm (2.4–3.1 inches)) for cable grommets, and a router for precise recesses. Pay special attention to the panel stability. Using a guide template reduces inaccurate cuts.
4. Wiring: Use cable channels or clips inside the cabinet to organize cables neatly. Ensure adequate strain relief to prevent anything from loosening or being damaged.
I’m curious: What are the exact dimensions of your modules and which electrical devices do you plan to connect? This greatly influences the type of outlets and cable management required.

I fitted my own Besta units with cable passages and can only confirm that a router makes the job much easier. The cable passages I used came from Ikea itself (the small cable grommet set for desks), and they fit surprisingly well in the Besta backs too.
Don’t underestimate the preparation! Be sure to mark the exact spots where the cables should come out, and first test with a drill to avoid hitting cables or screws inside the components.
And: Don’t get discouraged if it’s not perfect on the first try. With a bit of practice, it works really well, and furniture with integrated power outlets looks much more modern and practical! Good luck to everyone who wants to try this! 🙂
Regarding power outlets in Ikea Besta furniture, I would like to add: If a permanent installation is planned, I recommend reinforcing the back panel where the outlets will be mounted. This makes the back panel more stable and allows the power strip to be securely and permanently attached.
For cable management, flat cable ducts are also useful to ensure neat installation inside and to prevent any strain on the cables.
Important: Never place outlets directly behind doors or drawers, as heat generated by devices and connections may not dissipate properly.
One last tip: Outlets with USB ports can provide additional convenience, especially for media furniture.

Hook and loop tape often doesn’t hold for long. I agree. Screws are usually the most reliable fastening method for Besta, especially with power strips. Make sure to leave enough distance from the edge of the cabinet so nothing tears.
