Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion on how to adapt the Ikea Hemnes furniture series specifically for use in rental apartments. The Hemnes series is known for its classic design and sturdy construction, but there are some challenges when using it in rentals, for example due to limited options for wall mounting, often not being allowed to drill holes, and the desire to be able to remove the furniture easily without damage.

I’m particularly interested in practical modifications or additions that could help make Hemnes furniture functional and visually suitable in rental apartments without damaging the property. Are there clever solutions for common problem areas such as wall attachments, optimizing storage in small spaces, or protecting the furniture from wear and tear that have proven to work well?

I look forward to concrete tips and shared experiences!

Hey janosch66,

a simple solution is to fix Hemnes furniture using clamp or tension fasteners instead of screws. Special adhesive hooks or rubber buffers that do not leave any holes work well for this purpose.

To create more storage space, it helps to connect shelving units modularly and use boxes or baskets that can be swapped flexibly.

Hello janosch66 and everyone involved,

I would like to share some detailed suggestions on modifying the Hemnes series for rental apartments, as this is often a topic that requires careful planning.

1. Wall Mounting Without Drilling: I recommend using high-quality adhesive strips or clamp rails that can support the weight of lighter shelves or picture frames. Hemnes mirrors or shelves can be attached this way without damaging the walls.

2. Protecting the Furniture: Since rental apartments often have carpets or rough flooring, I suggest using felt pads under the feet of Hemnes furniture. These prevent scratches when moving furniture and protect the floor.

3. Optimizing Storage Space: Combining Hemnes dressers with mobile pedestals or stackable plastic boxes can make better use of the available space. Hemnes nightstands are also suitable for adding smaller boxes or baskets underneath for extra storage.

4. Maintaining Modularity: Hemnes offers some components that work well with additions, such as extra shelves or dividers. This allows for customizing the furniture to fit the room layout.

5. Visual Customization: If the Hemnes style doesn’t match perfectly, you can apply water-based adhesive films or paint individual surfaces with chalk paint (if permitted) to create a personal touch without making permanent changes.

I hope this provides a good overview of possible modifications. If anyone has specific questions about certain pieces, I’m happy to offer more advice.

Good morning,

I would like to add some technical points that are especially relevant when using the Hemnes series in rental apartments. The furniture is generally sturdy, but the following details require special attention in rental settings:

- Mounting: Hemnes wardrobes and shelves are often designed for wall mounting. Instead of drilling, special heavy-duty adhesives can be used that are reversible. It is important to know the load limits precisely to avoid damage to both the furniture and the wall.

- Weight: Hemnes furniture is quite heavy due to solid wood panels. If placed on carpet edges or soft flooring, it is recommended to place sturdy plastic plates under the feet to prevent sinking.

- Protection from moisture and wear: Rental apartments can experience increased wear and tear. A thin layer of clear furniture wax or a special sealant for wood surfaces can extend the lifespan of Hemnes furniture. It is important that this treatment is easy to reverse.

- Built-in lighting: Since Hemnes is often used in bedrooms, adding battery-powered LED strips can provide extra light without modifying electrical installations.

I would be interested to know how important quick reconfiguration is in your apartment, or if the Hemnes furniture is intended to remain in place permanently, as this greatly influences the choice of adaptations.

Hey janosch66 and all fellow thinkers!

I really love the Hemnes series, especially in rental apartments, because it’s so versatile! 😊 Here are a few of my favorite ideas that I’ve tried myself:

- Instead of drilling, I always use removable wall hooks with those adhesive strips. They hold really well and can be removed without leaving any marks!

- For small storage space, I use colorful fabric boxes in the Hemnes shelves – looks great, lifts your mood, and keeps things tidy.

- If you want to change things up, I customize the furniture with cool handles from the hardware store or paint them with chalk paint – easy and a lot of fun!

Don’t be discouraged, just try something out. Rental apartments should stay cool, and your own furniture should make a statement – you’ve got this!!!
