riromiHello everyone,
I own several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series, especially display cabinets and shelves, and I want to enhance them with LED strips to significantly improve the atmosphere and showcase the furniture more effectively. I am particularly interested in what to consider when choosing the right LED strips, the best way to install them (especially so they look good and are functional), and what to keep in mind regarding power supply and wiring to ensure everything looks neat and safe. Maybe someone has experience with this or can share tips on which products and installation methods have proven best. Are there also recommendations on whether to use warm white or daylight white lighting?
I look forward to your advice and ideas!

Generally, I recommend choosing flexible, dimmable LED strips with sufficient brightness—around 3000-4000 Kelvin, so warm white to neutral white, as this works better with wood than cool light.
Regarding installation: Many Hemnes pieces have smooth surfaces both inside and outside that allow you to use the adhesive backing of the LED strips directly, which is simple and neat. However, pay attention to the length so you don’t have to cut the strips too much. For display cabinets, indirect mounting is advisable—for example, along the top inner edge—so the light shines nicely downward without casting disturbing shadows.
As for power supply, there are various options: power adapters and plugs are common; make sure to route the cables neatly. I often use cable channels from hardware stores that can be clipped behind the back panels. Alternatively, Bluetooth- or WiFi-controlled strips are possible for added convenience.
Summary:
- Flexible, dimmable LED strips (warm white 3000-4000K)
- Adhesive backing for mounting (optionally secured with clips)
- Neat cable management (cable channels or hiding inside furniture)
- Optional controllers for dimming and color temperature
If you’re not very experienced technically, I can also gladly explain step-by-step how to plan the wiring.

Cool light can often make the wood look unnatural.
Furthermore, I recommend installing indirect lighting that subtly highlights the furniture without causing glare. The LEDs should not be visible but should cast their light onto the furniture surfaces. This can be achieved, for example, by mounting the LED strips on the inner edges of a display cabinet or underneath shelves.
In practice, using low-voltage LEDs (12 V) for power supply has proven effective, as they are safer for household use. It is important to choose a high-quality power supply that provides stable current.
- Pay attention to the length of the LED strips and carefully adjust them to the furniture dimensions.
- Use flexible and slim strips whenever possible to make installation easier.
- Fix cables behind the back panels of the furniture to avoid messy wiring.
This way, a very pleasant and elegant overall look can be achieved.

That’s an important point. Personally, I initially had concerns about the many cables that could get damaged or simply look unattractive. What helped me was always routing the cables behind the furniture and securing them with small clips. This way, they are protected from bending and hardly noticeable.
Choosing LED strips with splash-proof properties was also a good decision, as they are resistant to moisture inside display cabinets – in case you have plants or decorations with water. From my experience, a warm color temperature really highlights the wood grain, especially for furniture like Hemnes, which is often placed in living areas.
It also helped me to first experiment with a few meters of LED strips and cheaper strips before installing the full setup. This allowed me to learn how the light works and the best way to route the cables.
I know this might sound simple, but it only became clear to me while working on it how much effort clean installation and appearance actually require. But it was definitely worth it!

Many Hemnes furniture pieces offer enough smooth surfaces inside and out to use the adhesive strips of the LED strips directly, which is simple and clean.I can confirm and specify this observation. Hemnes furniture, with its planed wood surfaces and painted finishes, is particularly well suited for self-adhesive LED modules.
From a technical perspective, I recommend:
- Using 12-V LED strips with at least 4.8 watts per meter (1.5 watts per foot) to ensure good light density and color intensity.
- For installation, in addition to the adhesive tape, pressing firmly and securing (e.g., small clips or double-sided quality tape) is advisable to prevent later detachment due to temperature changes.
- Wiring should be done with shortened cables and connectors to create a neat and service-friendly system.
- Optionally, a controller (dimmer or color temperature control) compatible with 12-V power supplies can be used.
Regarding color temperature: 2700 – 3000 Kelvin (warm white) creates a warm light that highlights wood surfaces particularly well and complements the Hemnes series stylishly.
Additionally, it should be noted that the surfaces to be illuminated should be cleaned before installation so that the adhesive strips hold optimally and long-term stability is ensured.
