Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Malm bed with drawers, and some of the drawer parts (especially the side panels) are damaged or warped. I want to replace these drawer parts but am not sure how to proceed since the construction seems quite simple but firmly assembled. Are there specific replacement parts available from IKEA or other sources? And most importantly: how can I properly remove the old side panels without damaging the rest of the drawer? I would appreciate any tips on disassembly, alternative material suggestions, or experiences with custom replacements. Thanks in advance!

Hey, that’s a question every Malm owner runs into at some point! 🙂 IKEA usually doesn’t sell individual side panels, but at most complete drawer fronts or sets. But don’t worry, the drawers can often be taken apart quite easily if you know how the clips or screws are positioned. Most of the time, the side panels are just slotted or screwed in. Try pulling the drawer all the way out, then pushing down from the side and carefully prying – this often allows you to release the side panel. If everything is too fragile, a simple wood repair at a hardware store with MDF boards cut to size can also help. 🙂

That is exactly the crucial point you need to know. For IKEA Malm drawers, the side panels are usually fixed with special plastic dowels and screws. For removal, I recommend the following procedure:
1. Pull the drawer out completely.
2. Check if the metal runners or plastic holders on the inside need to be released – there are often retaining clips there.
3. Carefully release the clips using a thin prying tool or a small screwdriver. Be careful, as the material is often MDF and can break easily.
4. Once the side panel is loosened, unscrew the fasteners.

If you need replacement parts, IKEA itself does not offer them individually. However, suitable alternative parts can often be found through third-party suppliers or forums, while cutting your own wood panels is often the most flexible solution. A small tip: for cutting, use moisture-resistant MDF or plywood panels and treat the cut edges to ensure long-lasting durability.

Don’t you think the design of Malm drawers is actually overrated? Sure, they’re affordable and stylish, but all that fiddling with dowels and special screws makes DIY repairs almost impossible!

Why not just rebuild the drawers completely? Using real wooden dowels, proper screws, and solid wood – that lasts much longer and looks just as good.

Or is this an IKEA fan forum where you’re not allowed to say stuff like that? 😉

This suggestion is only partially suitable for this specific case. To replace an original Malm drawer, the measurements should be taken exactly, as the drawer slides and installation points are fixed.

Regarding disassembly: The side panels are usually attached to the front and back with screws and additionally held together by plastic dowels and cam connectors. It is important to fully remove the screws before pulling the parts apart to avoid damage.

Spare parts are officially only available by ordering complete drawers. Alternatively, you can use suitable 16mm (5/8 inch) MDF or particleboard and reconstruct the sides using standard wooden dowels.

I recommend taking a close look at the drawer slides in the bed frame to ensure the new side panels fit precisely before installation.

Replacing drawer parts: Remove screws, carefully detach the side panel, cut the replacement part to size. Done.
