Hello everyone, I have a specific question: How can I effectively protect my IKEA Billy bookcases from scratches caused by pets? I am particularly interested in which materials work best to protect the surface without significantly affecting the design, and how to find a good balance between protection and appearance. Pets, especially cats, often use furniture as scratching posts, and I want to prevent the sturdy carcasses of the bookcases from becoming unsightly or even damaged by scratches and marks. Has anyone had experience with protective films, covers, or alternative solutions? I would appreciate any ideas, especially if they relate to the typical material and construction of the Billy bookcases.

The best option is to try self-adhesive protective films made of PVC. They are thin, transparent, and can be neatly trimmed to fit. Alternatively, you can simply attach scratch protection pads to the corners if cats are scratching there.

An effective method is to selectively coat the exposed surfaces with clear varnish or polyurethane-based sealants. These enhance the surface’s resistance to mechanical damage without significantly altering its appearance. It is important to apply multiple thin layers of varnish and allow each layer to cure thoroughly. For more visible protection, protective films can be used, especially on the back side, when minimal impact on appearance is desired. Additionally, cat deterrence can be supported through appropriate behavioral measures.

Exactly! I covered my BILLY shelves with scratch-resistant films that are almost invisible, and the cats figured out after a day or two that it’s pointless. Really practical, and I can remove them anytime I want.

It’s also worth placing alternatives like scratching posts or scratching mats nearby. This way, the cats can sharpen their claws elsewhere, and the shelves stay intact 🙂

An additional way to prevent scratch damage is by applying transparent protective films made of polyethylene or polycarbonate, as these materials offer high scratch resistance while remaining flexible. It is important to apply them precisely without air bubbles to maintain the appearance and ensure adhesion. Mechanically speaking, the surface of the BILLY shelves is relatively robust but not permanently scratch-proof. Literature and product tests confirm that a combination of protective surface films and modifying pet behavior achieves the best results.

That sums it up well. Additionally, it can be noted that special anti-scratch sprays may be somewhat helpful, but their effectiveness is limited and often only temporary. Protective films should primarily be UV-resistant to prevent rapid yellowing. Alternatively, rearranging the environment can help, for example by positioning furniture so that shelves are less accessible to pets.
