SarkuI am planning to get some IKEA Platsa furniture for my living room. I am particularly interested in options with soft-close doors and drawers because I highly value the convenience and also want to avoid damage caused by slamming.
My question is: How can I find IKEA Platsa furniture with soft-close doors and drawers? Are there specific product versions, accessories, or modification options I should consider? I have already looked through the IKEA range, but the soft-close feature is not always explicitly stated or easy to identify for Platsa.
I would appreciate concrete advice, tips on suitable fittings, or alternatives offered by IKEA or other retailers. Thank you!

IKEA PLATSA does not come standard with soft-close doors or drawers. This series is somewhat limited in that regard because it focuses primarily on modular flexibility rather than luxury fittings. If you want soft-close features, you have the following options:
- Replacing the standard hinges and drawer slides with soft-close fittings, for example from BLUM or Hettich.
- Purchasing soft-close versions from other IKEA ranges (such as Metod or Faktum as a starting point) and modifying or adapting them to PLATSA.
- Using retrofit kits with soft-close dampers, which can sometimes be attached to doors.
Important: The modification requires good DIY skills, especially due to the hole patterns on the hinges and possibly the anchoring points for drawer runners.
I strongly recommend carefully checking the compatibility of the fittings with PLATSA before purchasing.

How great that you’re interested in soft-close for PLATSA! 🙂 It really makes a difference—I installed it myself and haven’t regretted it for a second. Back then, I bought soft-close hinges from BLUM and simply installed them. Note: you’ll need the right tools and a bit of patience!
One more tip: IKEA sells some soft-close fittings individually, so you can look for those specifically. If you don’t want to do it yourself, there are also ready-to-install alternative drawer systems with soft-close that fit PLATSA cabinets. Good luck—you’re going to enjoy it a lot!

The post by vinli already explains the necessary technical background well, but I would like to add some more nuance to the issue.
That is correct; however, it should be noted that IKEA deliberately does not install soft-close fittings in order to keep the range and price as flexible and affordable as possible. Still, the conversion is not trivial, as the hole spacing and mounting mechanisms can differ significantly with third-party products.
The question is also whether the desired soft-close function might conflict with the basic modularity of the PLATSA system. Another point to consider is the risk of placing unfavorable stress on the cabinet inserts when using different fittings.
Does anyone have experience with how retrofitting soft-close, especially with frequent use, affects the durability?

Cecilera6630 May 2018 12:01Soft-close functionality for PLATSA is only possible with retrofit fittings. Some suppliers offer sets that you can simply swap with the IKEA fittings. Important: Pay attention to the drilling holes and the cabinet thickness. I have not found any soft-close variants for PLATSA directly from IKEA.

sonPhilip30 May 2018 13:27I would like to explain in more detail how to implement soft-close doors and drawers with IKEA PLATSA. Basically, it is correct that IKEA PLATSA does not come with soft-close features by default, nor does it offer a range of suitable hardware in its product line.
Here is a step-by-step approach:
- First, you should determine whether the doors or drawers are suitable for a retrofit. The common BLUM hinges used for PLATSA have a 32mm (1.25 inch) hole spacing; check if the retrofit hinges are compatible.
- Retrofit soft-close hinges: There are so-called Clip-Top hinges with integrated soft-close functionality that can be installed relatively easily if you find the right model.
- For drawers, soft-close rail solutions are available, which you need to adjust to the length of PLATSA drawers.
- Adapters or drilling may also be necessary to fix the soft-close hardware. Be careful here to avoid compromising stability.
- Another reason to carefully review the installation instructions of the soft-close parts beforehand is to prevent assembly errors.
This way, you can add comfort without having to buy completely new furniture.
