Hello everyone,
I am looking for a reliable way to childproof the doors of my IKEA Billy bookcase. It is especially important to me that the solution is easy to install without damaging the doors or the bookcase, as I do not want to drill or screw anything. Does anyone know of sturdy yet residue-free options that prevent small children from opening the doors? Are there any particular locks or latches that have proven effective for BILLY doors?
I would appreciate any advice or experiences!

how durable these adhesive solutions really are under daily stress. The durability largely depends on the substrate, meaning how clean and grease-free the surface is before application. On BILLY doors without paint damage, most strong adhesive tapes hold surprisingly well.

mechanical alternatives that are reversibleThe only real option here is clamps that attach to the edge of the door or the shelf frame. However, they need to fit precisely to avoid being loose and allowing a child to slip through.

Sometimes, as parents, it can feel overwhelming with all the different options available.
What helped me was installing magnetic locks in a way that I can open them “blindly” – meaning without having to look closely. This way, I avoid unnecessary frustration when I’m busy.
Maybe my tip will help you: test the locks several times before installation and observe how easily your children can access them. This provides some reassurance and peace of mind.

I had secured BILLY myself using Velcro straps because we didn’t want to drill any holes.
The result was mixed: unfortunately, the adhesive only held for a while before coming loose. We also had fairly active children.
Recently, I switched to magnetic locks, which I attached using strong 3M double-sided tape. After three months of use, I am satisfied. Installation was easy and the locks could be removed without leaving any residue, if needed.
What matters most to me is that adults can still easily access the furniture without much force, while the kids cannot reach the locks.

If you use magnetic door locks, you should ensure that the magnets are strong enough to prevent small children from opening themThanks for the helpful tips!
I’m also curious if anyone knows specific product names or manufacturers that are particularly recommended for BILLY cabinets? Or have you had experience with IKEA’s own child safety locks? They are often affordable, but I’m concerned they might be designed more for larger cupboards and therefore may not be as effective on BILLY.
Also: How do you manage quick access in daily life? It often has to be fast, especially when the kids are sleeping and you just want to grab something from the shelf quickly :-)
