Unpleasant topic for me, but I guess I have to deal with it...

Our house (timber frame) is now standing, and the screed was just finished last Friday. Interior construction and exterior plastering will follow in the new year... My next project will be the base splash guard / drip edge in spring.

What alternatives are there to the commonly used gravel strip? Paving doesn’t appeal to me much either (at least not in areas without a driveway).

I’m not opposed to borders made of paving stones, concrete curbs, corten steel, etc., but the gravel...

Basically, the drip edge serves to prevent dirt splashes from rainwater hitting the exterior plaster.

Could you, for example, build a suitable border around the house and plant something in it that acts as a splash guard? Something that grows densely low to the ground and prevents dirt splashes without damaging the house or the base? So no aggressive plants like ivy or similar that spread into the building?

Alternatively, I would really appreciate photos or images that show something different from the gravel strip, to serve as inspiration.

The sooner, the better.

I feel the same way; I’m not particularly fond of this strip, especially because of the unusable space. However, according to the general contractor, it’s necessary to prevent moisture from rising too much into the wall (yes, dirt on the exterior walls is another reason).

I was thinking of making the strip wider, leaving about 15 cm (6 inches) of gravel around the wall as recommended, but placing a natural stone slab approximately every 25 cm (10 inches) so you can walk around the house without getting wet.

Something like this (although the contractor said the gravel stones should be thicker)

Garden path made of square stone slabs on gravel, next to a house wall, shrubs on the left.

The Same...

Modern garden path with black stepping stones on white gravel leading to house no. 5.

The picture already looks nice... I could at least do something like that on the side of our property where the carport and shed will be located... The other side of the property is too narrow to create such a wide strip (technically possible but it wouldn’t look good). The only option left would be the area leading towards the terrace.

We have it the same way. The strip is 150cm (59 inches) wide.
