Hello,
for our planned new build, I would like to automate as much as my budget allows. A central control system (touchscreen/app) for blinds, underfloor heating, and possibly indoor/outdoor lighting. Since I’m not familiar with this topic, I have two basic questions:
1). What approximate costs should I expect if about 170sqm (1,830 sqft) of living space including bathroom, toilet, hallway, 4 living rooms, and garage are to be automated? Of course, I understand you can’t give me an exact estimate.
2). How should I best approach my planning? Since I assume my budget won’t cover everything at once, I want to at least make all necessary preparations during construction. That way, I can add features later without having to open up walls. Sort of like preparing the roof for solar panels in advance…
Looking forward to your answers

So, we are also automating our house, but using a wireless system. That is more than enough for the scale of our project. We automate the blinds (with a safety switch at the patio door) and the lighting.
Why automation? Because I can and I want to. Yes, it is possible without it, but it really saves me time and, yes, I trade that for convenience.
For example: My mother still raises her blinds manually. Since all the blinds on the ground floor are lowered every evening, she spends about 5 minutes on it. With a single switch, that could be reduced to 1 minute. With automation, it only takes me one press of a button via an app, or it runs on a timer.
Furthermore, I can simulate presence while on vacation or simply let the cats outside.
For the lighting, it’s really about convenience. How often have I had to get up from the couch to switch the light on or off, or drag myself out of bed because I forgot to turn off the hallway light? That kind of luxury has its cost.
By the way, I would be really frustrated without light automation and the rain sensor on the car. Without parking assist (rearview camera and beeper), I would have already given the car a new look. I rely on my central locking system and automatic window controls.
Yes, it’s possible without all this. But that’s the endless debate. You can also live without electricity if you want, yet everyone uses it intensively anyway.

And wireless in a new build? I don’t understand that...
But the main thing is having an app

But there is also automation involved. At least the roller blind goes up and down automatically, depending on how I program it.
Oh, wait. Think again. No radio frequency. Battery-powered switches are installed, which can then be controlled via the home automation system if desired. So, it’s not a wireless system.
And yes, I like apps. I can program them myself.
KNX was 2,000 euros more expensive. For the small package I wanted, that was too much for me.
