Hello experts,

one of many questions: What is more economical, an air source heat pump or a gas boiler? It’s just one of many points we hardly understand.

We were considering a photovoltaic system with an air source heat pump, but it seems clear that usually, the sun shines the least when you need heating the most.

Is the good old gas boiler actually more economical after all?

Thanks!

Hello,

It is true that the energy transition away from fossil fuels and nuclear power is a confirmed decision. However, in my opinion, natural gas will continue to play an important role in the short, medium, and long term. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy also lists natural gas as a “significant contribution to the energy supply in Germany” for the coming decades.

When building our new home, we also faced the big question of choosing between a gas heating system or an air-source heat pump. After thoroughly researching the topic under hier stand ein link; Bauexperte, we decided that a gas heating system is better suited for us.

Although the annual costs are somewhat higher compared to those of an air-source heat pump, we have been very satisfied with our decision up to now.

Energy consumption (loss) is completely independent of how the energy is generated. Only the investment costs and the cost per kWh of heating are relevant. The latter naturally depends on consumption.
6000 kWh of heating for a smaller single-family home can be reasonable — around €40 for heating plus €5-10 for hot water. Ground-source heat pumps will be somewhat higher or about the same...
With such low consumption, the investment costs (to meet the energy saving regulations / building codes) become the deciding factor.
