ᐅ Experiences with gas or air-source heat pumps?

Hello experts,

one of many questions: What is more economical, an air source heat pump or a gas boiler? It’s just one of many points we hardly understand.

We were considering a photovoltaic system with an air source heat pump, but it seems clear that usually, the sun shines the least when you need heating the most.

Is the good old gas boiler actually more economical after all?

Well, I found the connections between business and government quite interesting. Sure, some points might be poorly researched, but we should also move away from the assumption that everything presented to the average German citizen must be genuinely good. Just look at the recent nonsense with the electric car incentives.

as you can see, there are many different opinions and suggestions on this topic. What is certainly important is a well-founded overall concept to understand your actual heating demand. Based on that, a clear evaluation should be made regarding which heat generator makes sense, also considering your domestic hot water demand, the location, ground conditions, etc. This first defines the requirements for your planner. As already mentioned, no one can predict how gas and electricity prices will develop in the future. However, looking at current trends, gas is economically and technically very attractive. If I were you, I would first gather all the information and plans you have so far and then proceed from there.

I have also read the article in Die Welt. It is just one example, but also one of many. If you look at the consumption figures of some entries in the heat pump consumption database, you will find many values above 10,000 kWh.

They really made a mess with their initial concept. The consumption values are collected – even the highest outlier uses 4,300 kWh of electricity per year for heating and hot water – 90 € per month is still quite high for a relatively new house... but where these horror numbers come from is another question. If you install an air-to-water heat pump in an old building, you can’t be surprised by high consumption.

I took the time to look into it and the highest I found was 6,111 kWh of electricity with an air-to-water heat pump having a COP of 1.5... it’s unclear where your 10,000 kWh come from.

I have read about the consumption figures from users in the "Rosa" forum... though I can hardly link to it now. However, you can also find the outliers in the heat pump database.

If you scroll through, you will find several cases with values of 7000, 9000, 11,000, and so on. Of course, some also operate in combination with radiators—that’s understandable. But this also shows how sensitive the system is and that the planning must be extremely precise regarding correct sizing and hydraulic balancing. You should not have a heat pump installed by someone who does not have expertise in this area.
