ᐅ Air source heat pump with fireplace, hydronic stove, domestic hot water heating

I have already read through several forums but haven’t found a satisfactory answer. Hopefully, someone here can help me:

We are planning a new build (single-family house, 130m² (1400 ft²)) and are unsure which heating system to choose. Since we plan to mainly heat the ground floor with a fireplace, our idea was to cover the remaining heating demand with an air-source heat pump (due to lower initial costs compared to other heat pump systems). In any case, we want to be independent of gas or oil! You often read that air-source heat pumps are not necessarily the most efficient heating systems, but in our case, it will mostly be used as a backup heating and for hot water supply—or am I mistaken?

Who has experience with the heating system mentioned above and can recommend an air-source heat pump? Or does anyone have an alternative suggestion for an AFFORDABLE heating system?

Thanks for all the answers!

How do I calculate the annual performance factor?
You can calculate that.

That value alone is not very useful!

Who claims that? Also, how can you decide on a specific manufacturer before carrying out any calculations such as the heating load? This is likely to cause serious problems later on.

Best regards.

Well, I simply consulted my heating contractor, and they don’t offer an unlimited range of companies. Of course, they still need to do all the calculations, but they mainly sell Alpha Innotec systems, which are also available in different sizes. I don’t think the choice of heat pump manufacturer alone will be decisive, and Alpha Innotec has a good reputation when it comes to heat pumps—I’ve done quite a bit of research myself.

A good heating engineer offers every air source heat pump available in Germany.

Heating engineers sell and install. Usually, no real calculations are done, and if any, they are partial and mostly not technically correct! The actual system efficiency (energy consumption during operation) doesn’t matter to them, as long as the heating works. The contract certainly contains nothing about consumption.

There are at least 20 more manufacturers. The key factor is not the brand or device, but the specific building demand considering user behavior and the climate location. Only after calculating the demand should you look for a suitable brand or device!

We have just received the documents for our plot of land, the one we want to build on once we possibly purchase it... One drawback of the property is that not only are we not allowed to drill, but we are fundamentally prohibited from installing geothermal systems because the area is located in a drinking water protection zone. So our only option is an air-source heat pump. Well, the local utility company could supply us with gas, but somehow all the little enthusiasm I had for building is fading. (My parents built a house 14 years ago, and their experience was so discouraging that I made a mental note of “Never ever!” Unfortunately, our youngest daughter has a physical disability, and there aren’t really good alternative housing options.)

Does an independent HVAC engineer carry out this calculation? Or should I add someone else to my checklist?

If they are also a certified energy consultant, they should be professionally competent to do so. If not, you can send me an e-mail.

What information is needed for the calculation? Our house isn’t 100% finalized yet, but the main details are already quite clear. I only know that our contractor is also authorized to issue energy certificates—is that considered a certified energy advisor? I’ll probably have to ask again. He assured me that the system, if we decide on air or geothermal heat, will be thoroughly calculated and sized. To some extent, you have to trust this, as I am not an expert myself. Our construction company is local and operates only regionally, working with local specialist firms, so I feel more confident with them than with a nationwide general contractor.
