Hello everyone,
we are currently building a semi-detached house through a property developer. We would like to have our gallery railing made of glass. However, the additional cost from the stair builder for this is extremely high. From our own research, there are numerous suppliers online who manufacture these railings at a more affordable price. Does anyone have experience with how complicated the self-installation is, or can provide tips on which trades to contact for the installation? It might be relevant to know that we have underfloor heating. I would really appreciate your feedback.

The problem with glass railings is that there are many ways to get it wrong. You need someone who plans it and adapts it to the specific conditions. Simply ordering something online will go wrong 100% of the time.

What is the cost with the developer? If it really is a developer, you shouldn’t interfere anyway, which means they build their railing, and you would have to tear it down again.

That is certainly special glass... and probably quite expensive

What will it cost?
It won’t be anything under €300/m (around $320/yard).

Are you referring to the online price?

What I have learned by now (or at least I like to think so) is that for almost all skilled trades involving materials (in this case, the railing), the online price needs to be doubled in real life to arrive at a somewhat realistic price including materials and installation (except for DIY store products).

This might be inaccurate, but whenever I researched for a raised terrace, it was always like that—for example, railings, decking boards, stairs, etc.

We also have a railing like that, directly from the glazier. It cost us almost €2000 for 4m (13 feet).

Since this requires quite a bit of coordination, I would recommend leaving it with the general contractor or coordinating it early on.

If you want it to look good, a lot of attention needs to be paid to the fixings to prevent the leverage from causing it to wobble...

What is your general contractor charging for that?
