patroklos21 Dec 2018 08:39Hello everyone, I am currently looking for alternative storage boxes for my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. The original KALLAX inserts are quite expensive and not always available. So, my question to the community is: Has anyone tried similar storage boxes from a hardware store that fit well in the KALLAX compartments in terms of size and stability? I am mainly looking for a sturdy, practical solution that is easy to take in and out and also has a reasonably suitable design. So far, I have seen some plastic and fabric boxes, but they are either too big or too small. I am particularly interested in experiences with MDF or wooden boxes from hardware stores, as I see potential options in terms of price and performance. Thanks for your recommendations and tips!

Has anyone here maybe tried similar storage boxes from a hardware store that fit well in terms of size and stability into the KALLAX compartments? This is an important initial question. Basically, a box with dimensions around 33x33x30 cm (HxWxD) fits into the KALLAX compartments. For hardware store boxes, I recommend making sure the internal dimensions fit precisely. Many MDF or plywood boxes are slightly larger, which makes them difficult to insert or causes them to stick out too much.
One tip is to look for wooden crates in the "fruit crates" or "wine crates" category. These are usually handy, sturdy, and often available in suitable sizes. Additionally, they can be easily sanded and painted if you want to improve the design. It is important to round off the edges sufficiently to ensure smooth loading and unloading.
Hey, I find this topic really fascinating! I've been thinking along similar lines and checking out what's available at home improvement stores. What's really cool is that there are now fabric bins with reinforced frames that can be custom cut or adjusted to size. These not only look good but are also very easy to handle! That’s brilliant! 🙂
I've noticed that too! Sometimes the bins are just too wide or too deep – so precise measuring is essential. I would definitely recommend double-checking the dimensions and possibly testing the fit on-site before deciding.

Regarding alternatives for KALLAX inserts from hardware stores, I would like to share my detailed experience because there are quite a few pitfalls to consider beforehand.
First, it is crucial that the dimensions are exact: KALLAX compartments are about 33x33 cm (width x height). The depth is approximately 39 cm (15 inches), but boxes should usually be slightly less deep to allow for easy removal.
1. Material choice: MDF is inexpensive but tends to bend under too much weight. Plywood or Baltic birch plywood sheets (about 6-8 mm (0.24-0.31 inches)) offer much better stability with moderate weight.
2. Craftsmanship: Many budget hardware store boxes have rough edges and imprecise dimensions. If you have some DIY skills, you can modify the boxes yourself: sanding edges, recessing handles, and possibly adding felt strips on the sides to avoid scratching or jamming.
3. Design: A natural wood finish can be enhanced with a simple application of oil or varnish. This often looks more discreet on KALLAX than colorful fabric boxes.
I’m interested to know whether you plan to modify the boxes yourself or if you prefer a ready-made solution? That would help provide more targeted recommendations.

Hello patroklos, I have tested several storage boxes from hardware stores for my KALLAX shelf and would like to share a brief guide with tips to help you find the best option yourself:
1. Take exact measurements: Width and height around 33 cm (13 inches), depth maximum 37 cm (15 inches), since the compartment is 39 cm (15.5 inches) deep and you need some clearance.
2. Material recommendation: MDF is inexpensive but not very durable. Plywood or multi-layer wood (6 mm (0.24 inches) or more) is much sturdier and flexes less under load.
3. Check the construction: If your boxes have edges or sharp splinters, it helps greatly to smooth them with a file and sandpaper. Especially the edges that touch the inside of the shelf should be smooth.
4. Handle solution: Boxes with grip holes or cut-out openings are the most practical. Alternatively, you can add handles made of leather or metal. Some DIY wooden boxes also allow you to install handles yourself.
5. Surface: For comfortable handling and a nice look, I recommend painting the boxes or treating them with wood oil.
Common mistakes include buying boxes that are too large or underestimating the weight, which can deform the KALLAX units.
Good luck finding the right box! If you have questions about specific models or finishing options, I’m happy to help.
