Hello!
I’m looking for a bit of inspiration. To the owners of indoor cats: where do you place your litter box in your house (we’re planning without a basement)? To those without basements: where do you dry your laundry in winter that can’t go in the dryer?
And regarding the utility/house connection room: it will house the utility connections, the washing machine, and we also need some space to store things like the vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies, etc. How big should this room be?
Finally, I’d like some opinions on whether it’s a good idea to have a connecting door from the garage to the house. I often hear that garages are easier to break into than houses, and then an intruder gets into the house quickly through the connecting door. But it would be very practical.
Thanks in advance!

j.bautsch14 Mar 2016 09:25We haven’t started building yet, but we plan to install the cat litter box under the stairs with a cat flap (this will be a small storage room mainly for the litter box, and it will also be a convenient place to store cat litter supplies).
We want to do our laundry on the upper floor in a dedicated utility room, where we will also dry clothes. For this, we plan to install fixed clotheslines, as we find drying racks too unstable.
There will be space for the vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies needed on the ground floor in the technical room (which will be slightly larger, providing some additional storage space of about 10–12m (33–39 feet)²). On the upper floor, these items will be kept in the utility room, which will be at least 7m (23 feet)². Depending on the roof design, there might also be some storage space available in the attic.
We are not sure yet whether the garage will be attached to the house, as we do not have a plot of land yet and cannot plan this aspect for now.

Hello,
whether you install a door connecting the garage to your house depends on your personal preference. I tend to be more security-conscious, so I would only do it with a proper door. This door should be as secure as the front door, which can make it relatively expensive.
Best regards,
Sabine

The litter box was most recently kept in a protected corner of the kitchen due to lack of space. However, we’re quite glad that we no longer have one.
We dry our laundry either in the utility room or outdoors. The utility room and the technical room are separate. Our utility room alone is over 12m2 (130 sq ft) in size.
I only find a door connecting the garage to the house useful if it opens near the cloakroom inside the house. Having it open into the utility room, as many do, doesn’t seem very practical or convenient to me. It’s more important that I can get from the utility room directly into the garden without always having to go the long way through the garage. Regarding security: before a burglar can pry open a garage door, they are more likely to break into a patio door. Of course, all entrances – including side or secondary doors – should be properly secured, and the garage door should always be locked when leaving the house. It is all too common to see garage doors left open out of convenience, which is basically an open invitation to any burglar.
