Hello,

During our kitchen planning, the kitchen fitter recommended a ventilation hood with an exhaust air system.

Which is better for a KFW55 house: exhaust air or recirculation?

Advantage of recirculation: you don’t lose the heat to the outside.

Advantage of exhaust air: odors are removed much more effectively to the outside.

Is an exhaust air system even possible with a KFW55 house?

We currently have a recirculating cooker hood in our apartment. It’s a Siemens model from 2015. Unfortunately, it is very loud, even on the lowest setting. I don’t like that.

In our house, we have an exhaust hood from AEG dating back to 2000. On the lowest setting, it is very quiet, and even on setting two it is still quieter than the recirculating hood on the lowest setting. We’re happy with that. For us, it’s less about odors and more about managing moisture and possibly grease.

To be honest, we often didn’t use the recirculating hood because it was too noisy. The kitchen is open to the living room and located internally without windows – a difficult setup.

But nowadays, there are certainly better and quieter systems available.

Due to many supporters and further research on the internet, I have decided (if it is even possible) to go with exhaust ventilation, as it is actually the better option.

Especially for an open kitchen with an open living and dining area and an open staircase.

Yes, noise is also an important factor with an open kitchen.

The developer said I should just do it myself after the final inspection.
What could go wrong in the worst-case scenario?

You could have to repay the funding from KfW if any modifications you make cause your house to no longer meet the requirements of your KfW energy efficiency level. This applies for a period of 10 years.
That said, I have never heard of an actual inspection taking place...

In general, it should be noted that recirculated air is always louder than exhaust air. This makes sense because the air has to be pushed through activated carbon filters to clean odors. With exhaust air, the air simply goes outside.
