Hello,

During our kitchen planning, the kitchen fitter recommended a ventilation hood with an exhaust air system.

Which is better for a KFW55 house: exhaust air or recirculation?

Advantage of recirculation: you don’t lose the heat to the outside.

Advantage of exhaust air: odors are removed much more effectively to the outside.

Is an exhaust air system even possible with a KFW55 house?

It is possible with a motorized wall duct and forced ventilation. And yes, it is obviously better in terms of the functionality of an extractor hood. However, it has the mentioned disadvantages.

I also had a recirculation exhaust in my previous shared apartment. Unfortunately, an external vent wasn’t possible due to building constraints.
Now, however, the new kitchen is equipped with an exhaust duct in the floor slab. That is definitely much more effective.
This was about an integrated exhaust system for a Miele induction cooktop.

As for the KfW subsidy, I’m afraid others will have to answer that.

There is no better option. You have to decide what is more important for you. Odors can also be effectively filtered with a good recirculation hood (I use a Berbel myself and don’t notice a big difference compared to the exhaust hood from my previous apartment).

Yes. There are also plenty of wall ducts (manual or motorized) that easily pass the blower door test with flying colors.

In our new house, we are also getting a recirculation hood with an active carbon filter (which even required an additional power outlet). It is supposed to absorb odors very effectively as well!

Currently, we have an exhaust system with an electric Weibel wall vent, which is really airtight!

Regarding the easy lead-in:

My kitchen always smells nice – so nothing needs to be vented out 😉
Joking aside, generally speaking: recirculation! Odors won’t harm you.
However, the decision also depends on the floor plan, open concept or not, staircase location, how much frying or cooking with grease is done…?
