Hello,

I am currently renovating an old small multi-family house (4 residential units). The new heating system is already installed and running. Recently, the heating technician wanted to install the outdoor sensor and asked me where the electrician had installed the cable for the outdoor sensor. I was confused and asked him why the electrician should do that. He said that the electrician has to install the power supply, the cables for the room controls, and the cables for the outdoor sensors. Of course, the electrician didn’t know anything about this, and now the cable has to be installed retroactively as well (however, the cables for the room controllers were installed by the electrician).

Question: Is it usually correct that the installation of the outdoor sensor cable must be done by the electrician? Or is the heating technician just trying to avoid responsibility here?

Best regards

It is within the electrician’s scope of work, but the heating engineer needs to provide input as well.

Yes, of course, the electrician only carries out the tasks they are contracted for. In my opinion, the heating engineer could assist by mentioning, when submitting a quote, the additional work that needs to be done beyond their own scope to ensure a fully functioning heating system in the end.

Hmm. In our case, the heating engineer wired and connected everything related to the heating system electrically. So, as always, it depends on how the contracts are structured.

Ok, thanks for the answers, so it’s usually done by the electrician after all.
Knallkörper: My heating technician told me that he is not allowed to do any electrical work and that if he were to do it, he would also only hire an electrician, which of course costs extra. Maybe that was the case for you. But I have an electrician for the whole house, so why should the heating technician hire another one?

At our heating company, electricians are also employed, which might be common in the industry once a certain size is reached. Otherwise, they would have to call in an external technician for every repair or replacement involving electrical work. Modern heating systems (e.g., air-to-water heat pumps combined with photovoltaic panels) certainly involve a lot of electrical connections. That said, the external sensor is probably something anyone can connect since it operates on low voltage. Perhaps someone here has more detailed information on this.
