Hello everyone,

I am looking into how durable and long-lasting the IKEA Kallax shelving unit really is when used over a very long period. Specifically, I mean usage over about 10 years, during which the shelf holds not only decorative items but also books, binders, and some heavier objects.

I am particularly interested in whether the strong connections loosen over such a long time, if the shelves sag, or if the surface shows significant signs of wear. It would also be helpful to know if anyone would still use the unit after this period or if a replacement or switching to a different system is recommended.

I’m also curious how this product compares to other shelving systems under similar conditions—in other words, its long-term quality, so to speak.

Looking forward to your experiences and assessments!

Hello Benediktal,

I have been using a Kallax shelf for about 12 years and use it very similarly to how you described – heavy books, binders, but also decorative items. Here are my experiences:

1. Stability: The joints have remained stable to this day because the plug and screw connections were carefully done. It is important to ensure proper alignment during assembly to avoid unnecessary stress.

2. Shelves: The shelves can sag slightly under excessive loads, for example more than 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per compartment, after several years. In my case, this only became noticeable after about 8 years, so in the long term.

3. Surface: After 10 years, visible signs of wear are noticeable, especially on the edges. Regular care with furniture polish, about once a year, is helpful.

4. Recommendation: Overall, I would still recommend the Kallax shelf for everyday use, especially due to its flexibility with inserts and boxes. For the highest demands on long-term stability, additional corner braces can be used.

In summary: Kallax is robust but needs to be used sensibly and occasionally maintained. For a 10-year project, it is definitely a sustainable choice.

That hasn’t happened to me. It’s important not to misuse the shelf as a ladder ;-)

There are normal scratches and small dents, but that doesn’t bother me much.

I have had a Kallax for 10 years, and it has held up without any problems. Shelves can be reinforced with supports if very heavy loads are expected. The surface shows normal signs of use, nothing serious.

I completely agree. I had mine in the living room for ten years, and sometimes you almost feel a bit sentimental when you part with a piece of furniture like that. Of course, there are signs of wear, especially when kids or pets are involved, the surfaces don’t look perfect anymore.

However, I feel that a piece like this also gains character over time – it goes through countless situations with you, from moving house to redecorating. That’s why I think it’s important to see the shelf not just as a functional object but as part of your living space, which adds to its sustainability and value.

In everyday use, I didn’t notice any major damage, except that I replaced the shelves earlier because they bent slightly under very heavy loads.

I can also understand that some people might be bothered if the stability isn’t quite the same after ten years as it was at first – but that’s subjective. What about you, Benediktal? Have you had the shelf for a long time or are you planning to buy it?
