I have the following issue.
The building (built in 1899, 2 stories plus attic, with a stucco facade) is going to be expanded. The question is whether the extension should be done in the "old style" (which is probably quite expensive) or if a completely new modern design, for example using glass and steel, should be chosen. The extension is planned to cover the full height, ideally with a roof terrace.
Are there any examples related to this? Or what is the common approach nowadays?
Thank you for any ideas or photo examples.

In my opinion, you should first consult your local building authority during their advisory hours (opening times are usually posted, and for larger building authorities you can often find this information online) to find out if and what changes are allowed. Given the age of the building, I wouldn’t be surprised if you are not permitted to remodel or extend it freely according to your personal taste.
Kind regards

KeinPlanHaber28 Aug 2010 18:30Thanks for the information. I have already been to the building authority with my regular architect. However, my architect has mainly worked on utility buildings and functional solutions in multi-family houses so far. Therefore, I am still looking for ideas.
The building authority has mostly given me the green light. Of course, not for a full additional floor or anything like that. But I have the green light for the extension.
