Hello everyone,

we are currently having a house built by a developer, and I’ve been thinking about the garage. According to the site plan, a 9m (30 ft) garage is allowed up to the house wall. However, since an additional floor-to-ceiling window was installed on the ground floor, you can now only build a 6m (20 ft) long garage without blocking the window. No problem, I thought: just move the garage further into the garden. But the city does not allow that because it has to blend into the overall appearance 🙄

After a long discussion with the planning advisor, I simply came up with the idea to extend my 6x3m (20x10 ft) garage with a 3x3m (10x10 ft) tool shed. In this case, I would leave the back wall of the garage open and therefore have more space for parking. Although the advisor was not too enthusiastic, this would be permitted 🙂

The alternative idea would be to build a kind of 3x3m (10x10 ft) canopy in front of the garage with a wall facing the neighbor (see picture). But not made of wood. However, this would darken the floor-to-ceiling window quite a bit. It could also look quite stylish. If I leave the garage door open, another vehicle could partially be covered by the roof.

I have attached the floor plan and hope you might have other ideas.

Garage idea with canopy:

Modern driveway with carport, side wooden slats, gray entrance door, and mailbox.

Floor plan of a house (ground floor): garage on the left, living/dining area, kitchen, terrace.
