Hello everyone,

I have a sample selection meeting with the builder coming up soon. We currently have the standard front door from Kebotherm, model 5777.

I’m not sure if it is possible with this builder to choose an electronic door, for example with a fingerprint scanner. If it is possible, it comes with a significant additional cost.

Questions:
- If I go with this standard door, how easy or difficult is it to convert it to an electronic door later?
- I am considering running LAN/power cables to the door area. What do you think about this?
- If I receive a credit of around €2000 (about $2200) for the front door, would it be worth taking the credit and selecting the door and contractor myself? I understand that this can be expensive.

Thank you very much for your help.

Then just exclude the power supply, order the front door with fingerprint access online, and have your carpenter install it for 400€ (about 440 USD)! You just need to tell your general contractor where to stop the screed and where the wiring should go, because beyond that point, it won’t concern them. Such a system is quite expensive online and costs around 1200€ (about 1320 USD) from my front door manufacturer (without the door and installation).

As a fairly universal solution, you can have a look at ekey to get a feel for the technology. However, most door manufacturers offer their own systems. Fingerprint scanners and motorized locks typically add around €1000 (about $1100) in additional costs.

Thank you for your response.
I did some research today on the ekey website.
The following components are shown:
1 Connection cable from detection unit to control unit
2 Power supply
3 Detection unit (finger scanner or keypad)
4 Control unit
5 Electronic distributor
6 Motorized lock
7 Cable transition
8 Connection cable from control unit to motorized lock

I’d like to bring up the Homematic door lock system. The entire system is visible, but you still have the option to use a traditional lock. It operates with a biokey fingerprint sensor, and that’s it. I’m planning to install something like this myself. However, it’s a wireless system, so I’m not sure if that would work for you.

I am currently looking into this topic myself, and maybe this will help you.

It’s important to know whether you want to use KNX, which is a bus system. I don’t think so, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. So I assume the fingerprint is meant as a standalone solution.

First, talk to your general contractor (GC), because anyone who doesn’t offer fingerprint doors nowadays is behind the times. The window manufacturer, GC, etc., usually purchase the doors. Often from Schüco, and the manufacturers offer this option. I am 100% sure you can get it, so here’s just some information.

The additional cost is about 1,000–1,300€ (approximately), because it’s not just about the fingerprint (I recommend ekey). The door needs a mechanical lock, because what happens if you lock the door with a key? You won’t be able to open it with your finger, since it’s locked. The advantage of a mechanical lock is that the door ALWAYS locks when it latches. If you then authorize yourself from outside with your finger, a motor unlocks the lock. The locking mechanism opens when you press down the door handle.

Ask to see a door like this, and you’ll quickly realize it’s not something you can just build yourself. Especially for the fingerprint, you need not only the scanner but also a control unit. In a standalone system, this is installed inside the door. Also the transformer and motor. The cable routing must be secure as well. So invest the 1,000€ (approximately) directly in the door.

There is another option:
But this requires a door with a mechanical lock (additional cost about 650€ (approximately)). You then install the fingerprint separately, for example at the doorbell. There are systems like Gira, 2N, Doorbird, Busch Jäger, etc. The advantage is that you can potentially replace the fingerprint easily later on. The downside is that you have to find a place for the control unit. You can see this in the ekey graphic you provided. We will have a KNX system, so I will install everything in the distribution board. Otherwise, you’ll have to discuss with your electrician where best to install it. Another advantage is that you don’t have to do it all at once. It is enough to buy a door with a mechanical lock and install the fingerprint later, connecting it to the door. Flexible, but slightly more work.

My recommendation:
If you don’t understand most of this or want something uncomplicated, have ekey installed directly in the door and you’ll be happy. Otherwise, consider individual solutions.

But first, speak with your GC. As I said, this is 100% doable, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
