ᐅ Doors for Kallax no longer fit after painting – how can I adjust them?

Hello everyone, I have the following problem: I painted my Kallax doors to improve their appearance. Unfortunately, the doors no longer fit into the intended openings of the shelving unit. They fitted perfectly before, but after painting, the paint layer is clearly thick enough that the doors are now too large and either get stuck or won’t close properly. My question is: How can I modify the painted doors so that they fit the Kallax again? I’d prefer not to completely trim them down, as the surface finish is very important to me. Are there simple, clean ways to adjust the doors afterward? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello everyone, I would like to add a more detailed tip because this topic is often complex.
1. Cause: Depending on the thickness of the coat, paint increases the door dimensions by about 0.3 to 0.5 mm (0.01 to 0.02 inches) per side. This should be taken into account.
2. Tools: Sandpaper or a file set is well suited for subsequent material removal. Orbital sanders are helpful but should be used carefully on thin edges.
3. Procedure:
a) Remove the doors and mark the exact spots where they stick.
b) Work the edges there with fine sandpaper.
c) Regularly check if they fit properly.
d) After sanding, smooth the surface with fine sandpaper.
e) If necessary, apply a thin coat of paint again on the treated areas to protect the wood.
4. Alternative: If you have applied paint in multiple layers, gently removing or sanding off the top paint layers with wet sanding paper (grit 400 or higher) might help reduce the overall thickness.
5. Tip: To ensure critical fit, avoid applying very thick paint layers before painting.
I hope these steps help you!

Yeah, I know that problem too, but don’t worry! 🙂
Exactly, work on it gently and carefully, and it will work out! Once you get the perfect fit again, the shelf will be much more enjoyable! Good luck and keep at it 😉 🙂

You just have to be patient and carefully sand down the thicker spots!
