ᐅ Do felt pads provide long-term protection for the Kallax shelving unit, or is additional support necessary?

Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into whether felt pads on the shelves of IKEA Kallax units are sufficient in the long term to effectively prevent scratches and damage, or if additional protective measures or maintenance should definitely be considered.
My specific question is: Do felt pads provide enough support for the Kallax unit over time so that you don’t have to worry about the surface or the shelf structure? Or is it advisable to use extra rubber or plastic mats, for example, to enhance protection?
If anyone has experience with the durability and protective qualities of felt pads—especially on frequently used Kallax shelving—I would really appreciate detailed information. Thanks in advance!

One more additional question for the thread starter: What type of flooring do you have? Hardwood, tile, carpet?
In my opinion, this makes a big difference in how effective felt pads are and whether they are sufficient.
Because felt pads are often completely sufficient for carpeted floors, but for tile, other solutions should be considered.

Hey! I’ve been using felt pads on my Kallax for over 2 years now – on laminate flooring. 🙂
They work really well to prevent scratches. Of course, I replace them occasionally because they naturally wear out over time, but the surface stays in great condition.
Tip: It’s best to always wipe off any dirt and have a smooth, clean surface before applying them.
For extra protection: If you move the shelf around frequently, I also recommend rubber mats. This helps extend the lifespan of both the pads and the floor.

This is a very important tip that is often overlooked.
Additionally, you might consider using a felt care oil to keep the fibers supple and delay wear.
Although it takes some effort, this extends the lifespan of the felt pads – which is especially worthwhile for heavily used Kallax shelves.

To answer kasans’ question: My floor is mostly laminate with a slightly textured surface, and the shelving unit is occasionally moved, especially during cleaning.
I find the advice about regular inspection and replacement interesting, as well as the idea of using felt care oil.
My conclusion from your input: Felt pads are a good form of protection, especially on laminate, but for extra security, rubber pads should also be considered, and proper maintenance of the felt is important.
One last question for the group: Is there a reliable source for high-quality felt pads that promise long durability? Or is it better to go with well-known hardware store own brands?
